Interview with Doodles Digital Audio

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Currently I do not know people on here, but am hoping to soon change that.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I just recently mixed a Hip-Hop song for one of my reoccurring clients. This was the 5th song that he has hired me to mix, and so as a way of saying thank you, I offered him a free mix. This is something that I do every now and then to let my reoccurring clients know that I appreciate their business and support.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Currently I am mixing a rock song, I am about half way through and I have 2 more days before I need to turn the project back into my client.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. Technology has come a long way. It's incredible the things we can do nowadays in a couple minutes that would've taken hours back in the analog days.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise my clients that I will provide quality work. If for some reason I don't feel that I can, I refund payment. I don't want to take money from anyone if its not earned.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The thing I love most about my job is that I work for myself. I started this up all on my own. I'm self- made. I get paid to do what I love and that's working with audio. Ever since I was young, I've always been fascinated with it.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "What if I am not happy with the audio that I receive?" And my response to this is "Each package comes with a set amount of revisions, plus you may purchase more revisions at an extra cost to help ensure that you get the final product that you are hoping for, but I can assure you that I provide exceptional work."

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I would have to say that the biggest misconception with what I do is that people think that if the recording is crappy, its okay cuz the mix engineer will fix it. But that's usually not the case. There's a saying out there "You can't polish a turd." Get the sound right at the source so that the song can sound its best.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Before mixing a clients song, I usually ask if there are other songs that this particular song is supposed to have the same vibe of. I also like to ask to hear previous songs of theirs so that I can get a feel of that artists style and where they are going with their song.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I would definitely make sure you listen to atleast a little of their work to be sure that they can provide you with quality. If you have an engineer that has done work that you are proud of in the past, continue working with them to help support them and ensure that you are being provided quality work every time.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My PC for sure, my audio interface, monitors, headphones, and acoustic treatment.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path is definitely being an audio engineer. I've been working on my craft for 9 years now and loving every minute of it.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My personal style I would have to say is a bit more aggressive. But as a mix engineer it is important to know when to be subtle as well.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to one day work with Eminem. I'm sure we are all a big fan, but my reasoning is because he is always setting the bar higher.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: In terms of "Production", my tip would be to get the song to sound as close as you can on recording day. This makes the job for the Mix Engineer sooo much easier and ultimately improves the quality of the mix that he/she is able to provide you with.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Hip-Hop/Rap and Acoustic. But from time to time I get hired to do other genres such as Rock,. Country, Ect.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing is by far my strongest skill.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: If I had to put it into words, I bring that sparkle and final almost magical touch to a song that makes each individual track sound clear and stand out in their own unique way to help bring the song to a "Radio Ready" state.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Depends on what Job I am hired to do. The most common work I do is Mixing. For this I usually approach with a "Top Down" mixing process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work straight out of my home studio. I have come to realize that Location does NOT affect quality of work, therefore there is no need to have a separate studio.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Jason Moss, Dave Pensado, Graham Cochrane, just to name a few.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work that I do for my clients is mixing. This is my most expensive service and as a "Thank You" for buying my most expensive service, I Include FREE mastering with this service.
