Interview with Myles Cameron-Smith

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm quite proud of the audio post-production work I delivered for some independent films, but the projects never saw the light of day.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A beat-tape that I will be releasing for free in coming months.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Why not both! Analog has magical qualities that at times can't be explained, and the digital realm allows me to be more productive.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: We are only here temporarily, so I feel I am spending my time on something that is worthwhile.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: To be frank I've never had that problem, yet.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What drives you? Is this supposed to be fun or are you madly trying to save the recording industry?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Be honest with your expectations.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: All I need is a MacBook Pro running Ableton Live, an audio interface, headphones and an SM57 mic.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I've been an IT professional for over 20 years but started taking my audio interests seriously in the last 8 years. My biggest passion has always been music, but life is one big jigsaw puzzle.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Frantic and exciting.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Let the piece of work draw you in the direction it wants to take you. Don't fight against it.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: It's hard to sum up in words, so for now I will just say anything from ambient to hip-hop.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Being able to work with whatever equipment is available. Having a mindset of "less is more".

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: Years of analytical listening and knowing when enough is enough.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I start by studying any previous works so I know where you are in your musical journey.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: There's too much stuff to list, so I'll just say a nice sounding room that smells like dusty vinyl and electronics.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Prince, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Trent Reznor, Rick Rubin.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Audio mixing, music production, sound for film and session conversion.
