Dillon Home on SoundBetter

I am a musician based in London specialising in Guitar, Composition and Arranging.

I have played in a number of bands as an Electric and Acoustic Guitarist and have written and arranged music for all of them, whether it was a Grunge/Rock trio, an Acoustic-Folk/Rock ensemble, a Latin/Funk band, or a 4 piece Indie group with a horn section and choir. As well as many years of experience in practice, I also have a degree in Contemporary and Popular Music from Newcastle University which has helped develop and reinforce my understanding of music.

I've had the pleasure of working with Dillon for many years in all of his capacities. He is a fantastic arranger, guitarist and composer from whom I've learned a lot, and I 100% recommend him!

Interview with Dillon Home

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: As a guitarist, I am far more interested in players who use the instrument as a compositional tool, writing interesting parts for the song in a melodic way to support a Singer-Songwriter. My influences include people like Johnny Marr, George Harrison and Elliot Smith, all of which demanstrate total devotion to the song. With this in mind, as a session player I am able to write style-appropriate parts if requested and I am also open to suggestions. In addition to my influences as a guitarist, I am also very heavily influenced by other non guitar-based musicians such as Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (The Bad Seeds) and Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) in my music songwriting/composition.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Mix everything in mono to avoid phase and clarity issues (most music isn't heard in true stereo). If it sounds good in mono, it will sound great in stereo.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: My work process varies depending on who I'm working with and what they would like to achieve. As a Session Guitarist/bassist, I would listen to the piece over and over until I know the song inside out, I would then begin to construct a part based on what the client has requested, or if there is no request I would experiment playing along with the piece before I settle on something that I think most enhances the music. As a composer/arranger, I am able to write with as much or as little guidance as the client wishes to give. If the client references a particular style/artist then I will listen to relevant music in order to get as close to their vision as possible. I usually start with band instruments first if it's a whole composition/arrangement and then move on to strings, horns, etc, if appropriate.
