JP certainly did one of the best mastering jobs I have ever heard. He was very reliable and answered quickly to all my demands. To top it off, he charges well under what is normally asked for such high quality. Don't even bother looking elsewhere next time you need a mastering job well done!

Interview with JP Villemure

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Not having "a job". Not having a boss. Working at home in a professionnal environnement I created.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: You'll be happy no matter what.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Indie, mostly rock, pop, electronic.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Listening. Isn't what's most important in my job?!

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Ideas, feeling, energy, movement and an impression of a finished work.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: For the mixing process : I get the split tracks from the client. Have a good chat with him/her to make sure I understand where we are going. I mix one song to completion. Listen carefully to the rough mix from the client if I have one, make adjustement in my own mix if I feel it's necessary. I send a first mix for approval to make sure we understand each other If we judge I'm heading in the right direction, I will be mixing the rest of the album/EP. We do revisions until everyone is happy. -- For the Mastering process : I get the tracks from the client Have a good chat with him/her to make sure I understand where we are going.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I built a magnifique acoustically accurate mixing and mastering room designed by my good friend Nicolas Grou at Grantham Acoustique. It's located in Sutton, a beautiful village in a valley surrounded by mountains. I work with Full digital setup with no shame. I find it faster and accurate. I just don't feel the need for analog tools and still the song I mix/master get on the charts. Go figure. ;) Anyway, we all know now it's not the tools that are important, It's the craft, the passion and what's going on in the brain.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm not he kind of person who goes into idolatry. That said, I've been listening a lot to these great artists who made me go for the professionnal route i'm now : Joy Divison, Sonic Youth, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Velvet underground, Rachel's, Beck, Brigitte Fontaine, Gainsbourg, Nick Cave, etc... Mixer. mastering enginners and producers that inspired me by their work : Tchad Blake, Steve Albini, Rick Rubin, Flood, Brian Eno, Butch Vig, Daniel Lanois, etc...

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: During my career I mostly done mastering. I also mix a lot of records. Every now and the I mix TV shows, movies, Web document, advertisement, etc..
