I've been working with Johannes Ellerbrock for 4 Years now. Whatever the project, he always delivers. It doesn't matter what genre it is, whether indie pop, hip hop, house or pop, Johannes takes the time to get the best out of every song and does so with good technique but above all with good ears.

Interview with Johannes C. Ellerbrock

Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I´m currently doing production work for some artists in Germany. I'm also mixing a lot of German rap these days.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because it's cheaper, faster, more reliable and just straight up more efficient for my workflow.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will mix their song in a way that suits their idea and taste, and keeps the original flavor and asthetic of the song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The beautiful process of not reaching perfection.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you expect the mix to sound like, what do you like in a mix? What are mixes you heard, and thought, that's fantastic, that sounds so good?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: a device that generates electricity, a grand piano, laptop with a DAW installed, a good pair of headphones and a subwoofer that can one shot my liver into pieces.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started producing music at age 12. I founded my first band when I was sixteen. After finishing school at age 18 I founded my second band, Schorl3, signed a label deal as a producer & writer and build my own studio. I then started to get recognized all over Germany and started to produce music for other artists. After mixing the first full length record of my band, I was asked to mix other artists work, so I did. Now I'm 26, and have been mixing professionally for almost 6 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Open and warm.

A: Reduce
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop & HipHop
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Mainly my taste in sound, and my ability to understand the idea and vibe of a song. After 8 years of mixing and working as a musician, I have become a very simplistic mixing engineer and my main goal is always to preserve the original vibe of the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I load the files into my mixing template, and then go on to edit and clean them up !when needed!. Then I let it sit for a cigarette length and when I come back I'm listening song and try to understand the idea behind it and catch the vibe. I then proceed to mix the song in the most straight forward way. Starting of with kick and bass, nailing the low end first. I then proceed to bring in the rest of the drums and the percussion. At this point I'm starting to introduce the main vocals to the mix and just when they fit, I will mix in all the other vocals. Then I will add the instruments to the mix and at last I will do the final polish on my busses.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It's very simplistic and boiled down to maximize the efficiency of my workflow. I´m currently mixing in a very customized Ableton session and I use a SSL UF8 UC1 controller set.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mix and sometimes master singles and albums. I'm also doing production work.
