Music Producer

Matteo Papaiz on SoundBetter

Long time multi instrumentalist, composer and producer, Matteo Papaiz is specialized in working for Singer Songwriters of different genres. From a strong Jazz and Brazilian musical background, Matteo brings many other different influences to the table when helping artists achieve their dream of recording the best music they can.

I've been a musician for 30 years, active in the instrumental jazz and brazilian music scene in São Paulo as a guitar player, bass player and drummer. I have a bachelor degree in electric bass from FASM college and a diploma as a sound engineer from renowned Instituto de Áudio e Vídeo in Brazil. I've been working around studios since the early 2000's, having collaborated with many great producers until I decided to start putting together my own studio in 2015 now located inside a bigger facility, where I record sessions for records and tv, compose music for artists and soundtracks, and produce, mix and master all sorts of projects.

Interview with Matteo Papaiz

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I love working with young artists. They bring fresh ideas and are open to try new things.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: I can share more than one. Play as many instruments, genres and repertoires as you can. Write music. Listen to music with non professional ears as much as you can. Have fun.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Pop songs inspired by the 1970's, 80's and 90's, always with a twist!

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I understand how a song wants to sound and I translate its personality into a final product.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I make it shine!

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: I like to engineer inside the recording room mainly 'cause I record myself but also when I'm recording someone else I find it keeps me more focused, I am not a fan of control rooms and talkbacks! If a song sounds ready to record, after putting down some vocals and harmony to a click track or a drum programmed part, I like to sketch an arrangement (write down parts for musicians when necessary) and then proceed with the real recording and editing.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I'm currently working with 4 channels, 2 Class A transistor Preamps and 2 Valve Preamps, I have a small selection of mics from AKG, Lewitt and Shure, and plugins from Waves, UA, Arturia and Slate. But the best part is I have a very good sounding room!

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm a big fan of the old school guys. I try to keep their techniques in mind even when I'm working in the box 'cause I believe it keeps the work sounding real. I'm always researching 1970's and 80's producers and engineers and trying to find out how they used to work and what their mindset was.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I compose from scratch both songs or music when needed and record sessions of guitar, acoustic guitars, bass, double bass, drums, keys and voice for records, soundtracks and tv. As a sound engineer I record, edit, mix and master projects. As a producer I usually do all of the above.
