Very creative, talented and open minded musician and producer. I had some rather interesting requirements for our one hour session, which involved ideating beats in non-standard tuning systems outside of 12-tone equal tempered tuning, but still had to be punchy and pop like a modern electronic track. Wilou brought to the same table some great musical ideas and tips on how to improve mix clarity through arrangement (over EQ, compression etc). Looking forward to working in more sessions with him!

Working with Wilou was a great experience! I started with sending him my vocals and sharing my thoughts on them. He was very quick to respond and gave me good suggestions. After sending demos back and forth for some time, I ended up with an amazing result.

Interview with Wilou

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: "Deep Inside" (see my portfolio playlist in my description) was one of the projects I really enjoyed. I worked together with a close friend and amazing singer. We wrote the lyrics together. I was responsible for recording and the music production part. I think it turned out pretty neat. The song and lyrics have a special place in my heart up to this date.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently building my music production service business.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Had to pleasure to work with Aaron Roman , a mastering engineer. Got an amazing result and can only recommend him specifically for mastering dance music!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both works for me, in the end the sound matters. Some people get more creative when working with analog gear, some don't.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will give my very, very best to achieve the sound you're aiming for. It don't be a boring but unique and memorable song!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love playing around with sounds and creating memorable moments through music. I love to help other artists get what they need to reach more fans and spread their music. Music is a magical thing and I love being a part of the whole process.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What's the price? - it depends from project to project depending on how much time I think it will take and expected efforts Can you mix / master my song as well? - Sure, should you choose the full track production service included! Can you help me with songwriting? - I've written songs before and can certainly help you you a little. I'm no expert tho, keep that in mind.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I'm not a DJ. A lot of people think music producers are DJs. Though I know how to DJ, it's not really something I'm actively pursuing. I compose.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: -What are you trying to achieve with this record? -Which sound are you striving for? -At what stage are you in? Do you already have vocals ready? An idea, ...? -What do you expect from my service? -Do you have a strict deadline? -Can you send me 2-3 reference tracks? -Anything else I should know?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't hesitate to contact me for whatever!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I guess I'd have electricity there otherwise everything will eventually turn out useless. I'd take my laptop, headphones, MIDI-Controller / some kind of key instrument, my audio interface and a mic with me.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've starting playing the piano at the age of 9 which lead to music production a few years later. After some years of producing I started releasing my music and just recently started offering my services online. I've worked with other artists before but still very little with paying clients. That being said, I will try my best to provide an awesome service!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I'm aiming for a timeless, modern and catchy sound. I like good melodies and a nice groove together with a professional and radio-ready sound. Furthermore, I love playing with new ideas or merging existing ideas thus creating unique blends.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There are many artists I'd like to work with but some include Wafia, Sandro Cavazza or Sam Tompkins. I love their voice and expressions.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Soothe2 is a super good plugin. It can sidechain vocals to the rest of the music with extreme precision. That way the vocals can stand out in the midst of all the other elements. And at the same time the other musical elements don't sound squashed or "killed".

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work on dance music with a strong pop influence.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I'm combining sounds of different genres in a new way which makes my songs sound unique. At the same time I love a good groove and melody. All these things together make up my strongest skill.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: It's very important for me to work together with my clients and not just do an instrumental for them. I'm trying my best to integrate their vision into my production. At the same time I'm naturally having my own sound, workflow and choices. I'm usually combining sounds of different genres or moods to create a new and unique production sound while not sounding too experimental at the same time.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I'm a classically trained pianist, so I'm getting a lot from playing around on the piano and putting it into my musical software later on. I'm always trying to sketch out the idea as quickly as possible and focus on the details in a later stage. That way I can focus on creativity first and make it sound even better afterwards. Most of the times I mix while producing as mixing is a very important step along my personal production process and influences the whole track. Mastering is more of a technical process for me, thus I save it until the end.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mostly work from my home setup where I'm working with KRK 5 monitors & DT 1990 Pro headphones. My room is unfortunately not acoustically treated as I've been moving a lot over the last couple of years. However, I have access to a professional and acoustically treated studio and am using the space for more technical parts of music production like mixing and mastering. I use Ableton Live 11 and a bunch of software plugins (Fabfilter, Ozone, Serum, Diva, Komplete 13 Ultimate, Soothe2, and the list goes an...). I also use a Yamaha Clavinoa piano and a Launchkey Mini MIDI controller paired with an SSL 2+ audio interface.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm inspired by and listen to a lot of different genres. However, I do enjoy the music of artists like Kygo, Justin Bieber, Louis The Child, Alan Walker, The Chainsmokers a lot.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually do full productions with singer / songwriters. That means I'm often doing everything expect the singing and writing part. Sound design, sound selection, arrangement, composing, mixing & mastering, fitting all the elements together, giving feedback, ...
