I am a session guitarist and mandolinist with 30+ years of studio experience working with artists to create for the song. Skilled in Rock, Country, R and B, Funk, Bluegrass, and Metal. I specialize in recording all genres of guitar and mandolin for singles, full albums, film scores, commercials, etc. I also have extensive experience playing bass, lap steel, fiddle and dobro on recordings. Check out my audio sample to hear a compilation of styles ranging from soul, rock, metal, country, fingerstyle, bluegrass, alternative, etc.
Typically, we will begin with a short meeting by phone, messaging or online conferencing to discuss your ideas on the direction of the song. You will send me stems or audio mixes of your song(s). I will record tracks remotely and send them to you or the studio you are working with via the internet. You can approve or ask for modifications to the tracks along the way in an iterative process. Price will be based on the amount of work involved and tracks recorded. Typically $50 - $200 per song. I will quote a price based on the deliverables outlined in our initial meeting. If the project ends up requiring less or more work/time then price may need to be adjusted up or down. However, to avoid any surprises I will stay in complete communication with you about this. I generally stay with the original quote but I want to stay flexible.
Once the project is complete, if there are small unforeseen modifications needed I will complete these as a benefit at no cost, within reason.

    Skinny is amazingly versatile and has rose to the multiple challenges I asked him to tackle. Can you play a Paul McCartney bass on this song, can you play a Mac McAnally style on this song, can you play a David Gilmour thing here, can you throw in some classical guitar here in this string quartet, throw some mandolin here, violin here, can you play something good here cause I have no idea what I want here. He did it all, and the sound quality received was perfect. Thank you again Skinny!

    Skinny is amazingly versatile, both in the instruments he plays, and in the styles he performs. I was in need of several different performances, from country picking guitar, to mandolin, to bass guitar and rock guitar and even some violin. He not only was able to play everything I needed in the styles I requested but the final product and sound quality were excellent and professional sounding. I would recommend him for you project again and again.

Interview with Skinny Webb

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The projects I am really proud of include songs that I have a huge involvement with shaping the soundscape with my guitar. For example, I worked on an album a few years ago for a singer/songwriter that only had vocals, drums, bass, and acoustic guitar. I was give the liberty to transform the album into something much bigger by layering guitars in the rhythm and solos.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working a praise song for a client that has a Pink Floyd and classical strings influence.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital but using analog methods. I try and approach a take as if I have to play the part from beginning to end without punching in. This is what I mean by analog methods. The end results is much more natural and human sounding.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will work hard to create what the client wants.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The artist and creative aspect of music.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Can you play this or that on this instrument? My forte is guitar and mandolin but I am also proficient on dobro, fiddle, banjo, bass.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I don't find that there are many misconceptions about what I do in the session world.

  16. A: Are you looking for a particular style, tone, or influence? If so, can you describe it? If not, would you like me to make some decisions on what might sound good? What is your deadline?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Look for someone willing to work hard to deliver what you want. Skill on an instrument is important but you want someone who listens to everything in the song and who is willing to serve the song above everything else.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Let's assume there is electricity. lol Martin Acoustic, Fender Strat, amp modeler, some type of recording device, Collings Mandolin.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been playing and recording for 40+ years. I am also a web developer and systems administrator. My career path has included both music and tech development. I don't see a difference in the two when it comes to creativity. I am able to do both and each supplements the other financially at varying times.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is diverse. I don't have just one style.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: If I were to pick only one artist to work with it would be Pete Townshend. Pete was skilled at songwriting, guitar, studio wizardry, and arranging. I could learn a lot from a guy like that.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Enjoy the process rather than looking at the process as a means to an end.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I am predominantly hired to play guitar and mandolin in rock, country, and Americana acoustic music.

  32. A: Versatility as a guitarist and as a utility musician.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring what the client wants. If they would like me to mimic or copy a certain artist or style I will do that. If they would like me to add some of my own ideas I am more than happy to do that as well.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I consult with the client about their needs for the song. What style, tone, influences they would like me to incorporate on the song. On any given instrument I take into consideration the overall song and if I am serving the song by adding my parts.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a PC based system with a Presonus Studio 192 interface and Studio One Professional DAW. I use both amp model and real amps. Line6 Helix, Mooer GE200, Mesa Boogie Mark V amp, Marshall JCM 800 Amp, Fender Deluxe. For the real amps I use SM57, KSM32, Rode NT1. For acoustic guitar and mandolin I use microphones. My main acoustic instruments are Collings MF5 mando, Colling D1A guitar, and a Martin 0M-21.

  40. A: Brent Mason, Alex Lifeson, Warren Haynes.
