Cole Rieger on SoundBetter

Producer, Mixing engineer, and Experienced audio editor with experience in Pop, Indie, and CCM. Passionate about taking your project from any stage to the polished song you hear in your head!

Hi I'm Cole Rieger! I have been working in the industry for a little over two years now and have experience with end to end production, mixing, and extensive work with various types of audio editing.

I love to take a production that starts at a voice memo and work with the artist to figure out the song they are hearing in their head and bring it to life. I have worked with Indie and pop artists such as Solafide! and Rion page on full scale productions that range from full Indie rock to tight pop. I am passionate about finding an Artist's "sound" and creating a song that THEY would want to listen to on repeat.

I have experience producing and mixing large CCM projects, both live and studio. I have worked with groups like JAX United, Celebration Worship, and Gina Umoh. I have worked on dozens of post-live mixes and know how encapsulate the energy of the room, create big punchy drums, and create a big mix that makes your live worship sound pro.

I also have hundreds of hours of experience Melodyning and manually editing vocals, snapping drums, de-clicking and de-poping, and other various edits that come with live and studio. I worked as an editor in a large studio in Jacksonville for over a year before I began producing and mixing. I spent this time learning all of the tricks and tips to taking any raw audio and making it mix ready.

Interview with Cole Rieger

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I actually have a bachelors in mechanical engineering. I had been working as a session and live musician all throughout high school and college, but It wasn't until about 3 years ago that I started to work in more studios, gaining experience working on productions, editing and mixing.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: I would love to work with Amanda Cook, especially on her new "pop poetry" stuff, very into that right now.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Work from references. The more references you have, the easier it is to catch the vibe and come up with ideas you might not normally have.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Right now I am currently in the middle of two Indie pop songs, and two CCM songs. One live and one studio. This is pretty typical work for me.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I feel my strongest skill is creating new sounds with synths and outboard gear such as tape or euro rack. I love to explore new sounds outside of my DAW and craft something unique to the song.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I try to always bring a positive attitude to any session. I know that sound super cheesy, but wether an artist has 100k followers or 10, they need a producer who is going to encourage them and not make them insecure about being real and venerable in their music. I want to see my artists not afraid to try new ideas and be real in their work without being worried about what their producer will think.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: In production I love to get references from the artist to work off of. I want to know what inspires the Artist and what they wish their music could sound like. From there I create a rough demo for us to go back and forth on and start curating the vibe. Once we have the vibe and the demo, I start tracking all of the pieces and finalizing all of the production.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have a home studio set up with GIK acoustics for my treatment, Focal alpha 80's for monitoring, and a UAD Apollo 8 for my DAC. I have several outboard synths that I use on all of my productions for the analog feel as well as an assortment of pedals to run them through. I also have access to a large studio that has BURL conversion, ATC monitoring, and a slew of outboard gear for mixing.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I have always been inspired by anything Justin Armundrund does. I love how he can do anything from indie pop to CCM and make it sound like something I have never heard before. I also LOVE anything Charlie Puth.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I most typically do full production and mixing, typically starting with a voice memo or a bare bones demo. I do anything from pop productions that are fully programmed to indie rock or worship that requires live tracking. I have access to great tracking facilities across Jacksonville as well as accredited session players that can meet any of my clients needs. I also do alot of work post-mixing worship services/recordings. I am very experienced in editing drums, vocals, and cleaning up audio as a whole to make live mixes feel tight and professional.
