Patrick was absolutely excellent in every way. I sent him a difficult piano solo that I had written, and he played it brilliantly. It was clear that he had taken great care to make sure the piece sounded its best, just as if it had been one of his own compositions. The quality of the recording/mixing/mastering was also first rate, and in addition to all this, he was extremely kind and courteous! He’s a wonderful artist and a joy to work with!

Patrick is a fantastic pianist, composer, and arranger. In this project, he helped me to complete a neo-classical piano piece. He recorded the piece and created professional sheets of the music. The work was outstanding. Patrick is also a great communicator and very nice person to communicate with His services are highly recommended.

I've had the pleasure to work with this very very talented musician who has some really good musical sensibilities. You give him anything and he'll turn it to something magical. He is very sincere towards his work and goes to any extent to keep up with his commitments. Above all, he is a great human being. He considers every project as his own, and gives it all the care and detail that it needs. Can't wait to work with him again. Cheers! :)

I have been working with Patrick for about a year, and all the work he delivered was 100% professionally well done. He is always concerned about the quality of the final composition and he works hard to have everything well-composed.

Interview with Patrick Trentini

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I cannot deny that one of the most rewarding experiences was devising and recording the piano parts for the music for a Netflix series, specifically the second season of the series "Kota Factory". Seeing your name in the credits of a product that reaches millions of people is a truly satisfying payoff.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on several projects simultaneously. I am making the music for a video game in collaboration with a team of programmers from Eastern Europe, I am recording the piano versions of some albums in "ghost producer" mode for a very large U.S. Spotify account (which totals more than 3 million plays per month), I am recording the entire piano work of a French composer, and I am working steadily as a partner of a recording studio based in Portugal.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: If a freelancer has been admitted to SoundBetter's premium program, I believe that is a more than adequate reference.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital all my life. The warmth of analog is hard to replicate, but the versatility of digital has made my work resoundingly more streamlined, powerful, and "editable".

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to never distinguish between "A" or "B" works, there are only two genres of music, music done well and music done poorly, and I am too much of a perfectionist to deliver something that is rushed or that I am not fully convinced of.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most is making my clients' projects come true, whether they are large productions or amateur works. I approach every commission with the same meticulous care.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The thing I am asked most frequently is whether I am willing to change what I have delivered. As mentioned, the risk of making big changes is mitigated by keeping the client updated during the creative process, and generally, I am always willing to work to the satisfaction of those who hired me if the requests are relevant.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Fortunately, I have never run into misunderstandings; transparency has always saved me.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I simply ask them to be as clear as possible about what they need, to avoid moving in a direction other than what they are looking for. With experience, I have learned that this risk is in any case averted by progressively sharing the results of the work (when necessary) rather than not letting them hear anything until the final delivery.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice is to look for professionals who are open to dialogue, and in this case, I think I am one of the best. I detest those who work by saying, "This is the product, I am the artist so I decide!" the client absolutely must have a say, a decision-making way of working by those who are hired has little future.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Even 5 is too many: all I need is a good piano, stave sheets, a pencil and a small tape recorder. Masterpieces can be created with only that.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been lucky enough to work professionally with piano (and, in general, with music production) since the day I finished my studies in 1997. I can therefore say that I have been in this profession for as long as I can remember.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I use only two terms: emotional and elegant.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’m going to say Ryūichi Sakamoto again. It would be wonderful to start from his idea and develop it according to my own language.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: The key is to never settle for a result that is 99% satisfactory. The only acceptable goal is 100%, and often, if the final solution does not arrive, simply waiting a day or two without working on that piece is enough to ensure that, at the next listening session, the answer almost comes on its own. The creative process requires patience and determination.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on various genres of music, but my specializations are classical, instrumental music, pop, acoustic, and ambient/new age.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I am blessed with the "perfect pitch", which means that I hear every note as if it were "pronounced" by its name. Thanks to this ability, the margin of error in everything I make is absolutely nonexistent.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Simply two things: excitement and a lot of experience.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I always start from an idea, whether it is an image, a description, a reference song or a melodic or harmonic unit (provided by the client or created by me). From there begins a real "study of proportions" to achieve the best possible composition from the point of view of expressive moments within the piece, thus reaching an outline version (a real "draft") on which then begins a detail work involving every single note.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I am fortunate enough to have a magnificent Yamaha grand piano that includes a MIDI interface from the factory, and this also allows me to use it in "master keyboard" mode. I therefore record the piano using the most advanced Audio Plugins but always using the keyboard of a real grand, which makes a radical difference in terms of touch and sensitivity. I work with Logic Pro, making use mainly of Native Instruments' Komplete suite and some Spectrasonics and Synthogy products, while on the audio equipment side I use Genelec, Beyerdynamic and Focusrite components.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: My main references are composers on the "border" between classical, pop, and ambient/cinematic music as I have developed my skills in those areas. If I had to name one, I would definitely say Ryūichi Sakamoto.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I perform a wide variety of tasks for my clients, very often in "ghost production" mode. My main skills are the conception and recording of pianos as well as, more generally, the composition and arrangement of unreleased pieces, to be used either as background for vocals or as exclusively instrumental pieces (including music for video games or video soundtracks, I have completed several jobs in these fields as well).
