Interview with Josh Balane Music Productions

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My Music Production work for an upcoming game Mediocre Monster. The game is still in development, but it was my first ever paid gig. It was a lot of fun to work on it, and it validated me as a budding audio professional at the time.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Multiple voice over projects for corporate AVPs and TVCs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet - but hoping to change that!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. Mainly for the practicality.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to provide you music/voice work that will make your clients and consumers happy.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The freedom to express myself.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What's your rate? My answer - ___, but it can be negotiable.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy to do versions of a music track or a song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your peg - what do you want to sound like? What is your budget? What is your deadline?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Understand what your provider is capable of by reviewing his past works. This will give you a general idea of what your product under his services will sound like. It can be bad for workflow when both parties have unrealistic expectations.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: PC, Microphone, Interface, Wifi, and Headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Initially graduated BS Life Sciences at Ateneo de Manila University, in preparation for med school; but I realized later on that wasn't for me. Self-studied music production for a year and became a full professional after that. Been about 6 years now. At year 2 I branched out in to becoming a voice talent. +4 years a voice talent now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile. I can do most genres, as long as client has provided a peg.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Thomas Bergersen. He's one of my favorite composers.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Mix for "loudness" at the loudest part of your song. Don't try to make every segment of your song loud; dynamics can be a good thing.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Usually pop, though my favorite genre is epic classical-style music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My versatility. I can provide most audio solutions.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Depends. Could be my unique arrangements and production, or my literal singing voice.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Talk at length with client regarding what they want, get to work on the first pass, and discuss with client what to change from there. After that, repeat process until client is happy.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Blue Microphone "Baby Bottle", M-Audio 2x2M, M-Audio Oxygen 88 MIDI Controller, i7-8700k Intel Processor, 16 GB RAM, NVMe SSD storage, Prodipe Pro 8 v2 Speakers, and various Kontakt Virtual Instruments.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Thomas Bergersen, mostly. Huge fan of his grand, orchestral sound.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Usually voice overs, but I also do music production and singing. I'm also good at tuning vocals with minimal artifacts.
