Jeannie Deva

Vocal Producer / Vocal Coach

Jeannie Deva on SoundBetter

Hello! I am a vocal recording specialist; a member of the Grammys and the Latin Grammys, & International celebrity voice & performance coach. For my work with singers on album recordings since 1988, I've been endorsed by producers and engineers of Aerosmith, Elton John, Bette Midler, Fleetwood Mac, The Cars and many more.

I handle all things vocal from preproduction to studio set up for the singer: mic choice, acoustic placement of the singer to capture the unique qualities of their voice; headset mix; and more. I keep track of every detail of every take to create the fastest and best vocal compilations, saving money, time and nerves. I work with the singer and as the liaison between singer, engineer & producer.

“Jeannie Deva always has her vocalists prepared for the studio, both mentally and technically, and with complete conviction. This is due to her consistent persistence to detail in her pre-production sessions. I would highly recommend her services to producers and artists who want to get convincing vocal performances.”
Jesse Henderson, Chief Engineer, Long View Farms Studios, [The Rolling Stones}

"One of the best decisions I made about my recording was to put Jeannie Deva in charge of vocal production. The minute she entered the studio good changes began to occur. Her directions were precise and correct, her ability to pin point and fix vocal problems were uncanny. From where I positioned the vocal mikes to aid the tone production, to understanding the content and context of my songs, she helped me create vocally the communication beyond what I imagined possible. I am ecstatic about the results." - Ksenia Mack (opening act for Willie Nelson, Indigo Girls, Mark Cohn, Warren Zevon)

Interview with Jeannie Deva

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: If you see the whole process through, you will have a recording that you will be proud of, that will turn heads and that will, (with the proper marketing), advance your career.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I recently worked as the vocal producer at Capitol Records on a single for Hey Violet (signed to Capitol). It sounds amazing and I'm looking forward to it's release!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love music. I love music that's done well. The entire creative process that goes into creating music especially on a Pro level is a spiritually and emotionally enhancing experience.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: Many bands/singers are working with a limited budget. So they try to cut corners. Unfortunately, that frequently translates to the singer having the least time to record their vocals and not enough time spent on their vocal and song performance development prior to arriving in the studio. The result of this lack of focus on the singer is that the recording takes too long and gets "finished" before it's actually good enough to stand up and compete with a top Pro level. The singer IS the focal point of any recording and their vocal needs to be excellent - such that it can captivate the listener even if that listener doesn't ordinarily like that style of music. Great singing will always be noticed and will make the recording, the band and their career.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: I'd take a great vocal mic matched to my voice (Sennheiser or EV mics), my MAC laptop with Pro Tools and various plug-ins, my TC-Helicon Voice Live3 Effects Pedal, TC-Helicon Personal Monitor, A Hercules mic stand with EZ Height Adjustment Lever and my Mini Digital Grand Piano.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Your choice of recording mic and headphone manufacturer can make a HUGE difference in how you sing and thus your end result.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Musicality, conviction, believability, passion, focus, artistry, originality, magic, humanity, creativity, a fresh approach that helps a singer and their recording project stand out from the crowd that connects with and moves the listener. I keep the bar high, bringing out the best in each singer I work with.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I work everything from vocal technique to performance technique to vocal recording technique. I do everything a singer needs to ensure stellar and passionate vocals are achieved in the studio and on the stage. This includes pre-production so that each singer arrives in the studio 100% ready to nail the vocals and that translates into a fun session that has great vocals in often half the time. Additionally, I am the founder of The Deva Method®, Complete Voice Technique for Stage and Studio™ used by singers and teachers around the world. I've been teaching and coaching singers worldwide for over 35 years and a vocal producer for 27 years, working in studios around the world.

  • "How a Vocal Producer Can Spark Your Next Recording" by Jeannie Deva (Music Connection Magazine)May 18, 2015

When I mention “record producer” or “recording engineer” to just about anyone in the music business, I usually get an understanding nod. If, however, I say “vocal producer,” more often than not, I see looks of uncertainty about who that is and what they do.
