Interview with Green Buffalo Recording

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have worked on numerous albums and projects, but I am very proud of the work I get to do with BONG WIZARD.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: BONG WIZARD's new album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at this time.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both! Analog will give you the sound that everybody wants, but often times has it's drawbacks in regards to time and price. Digital gear will get you there quicker, and often times can sound just as good as analog gear. There's no reason you shouldn't use both as long as they are achieving the sound you desire. Every piece of gear has it's place and purpose.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Customer service. If there is ever an issue, we promise to work it out to the best of our ability

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The ability to work with passionate people to help create and deliver their art to the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: My most asked question is in regards to revisions to a mix. The answer is always "yes, we can do that."

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy. It's not easy, it takes a long time to learn how to do correctly. I often times tell people that my rates do not reflect what I'm doing today, they reflect the time it took me to learn how to do what I do today.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I only ask three questions: Who are your influences? Do you have any records in your mind with sounds or tones you would like to emulate? What can I do to make this something we will both be proud of?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be prepared, and double check to ensure you have the proper files/tracks before booking.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Neve 1073, Neumann U87, Urei 1176, UA LA2A and a 24 track analog tape machine.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started in college as an intern at a live sound venue, while recording bands/artists in my apartment. Since then I have done so much, including, but not limited to: live sound, recording, mixing, mastering, commercial AV, consulting, production, stage management and post production.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Great drum sound, "wall of sound" style rhythm section and precise vocals.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I want to work with any artist that is passionate, regardless of genre. Ultimately, I want to help artists create something they are passionate about and believe in 100%.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Arrangement is key! If you have too many instruments occupying the same sonic space, it will be very difficult to mix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Usually rock, metal, pop, folk/americana and R&B, but I have worked across many other genres including, blues, jazz, pop, electronic, EDM and world.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My ears are my most valuable possession. It took a long time to master and understand the physics of sound, and even longer to know how to listen critically. I let my ears do most of the work, so that everything else flows naturally.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Style, expertise and knowledge. I know how to mix to many different styles through my ten plus years of experience to make sure it sounds natural for the genre, as well as exciting and captivating to the listener.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually listen to the song before I do anything. I want to get a feel for the music and the vibe it's trying to convey. I think it's really important to listen to what the song is trying to do, and then represent that with the mix.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Running the latest version of Pro Tools and Studio One, with a full suite of Waves, UAD and other plugins. Urei LA-4's, Warm WA76's, Chandler Preamps and other outboard gear available.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Thomas Meeks at Meeks Audio and I are great friends, colleagues, and competitors. We inspire each other daily.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing, Mastering, Reamping and production.
