Tommaso Ermolli on SoundBetter

Hello there! my name is Tommaso Ermolli and I am a guitarist, songwriter, producer and film composer from Italy. I grew up listening to the legendary LA scene of guitarists. Landau, Lukather, Saraceno are probably my top three. I'm a recording studio rat and I won't get out of it until you're happy with the delivery you expect!

I like to be a utility guy so my list of services is pretty broad!
My primary instrument is guitar (both electric and acoustic), I have been playing it for 20 years now.
I love tracking and I have tube amps, pedals and mics all over the place :)
Beyond that, I like to help with anything that might make your production better, adding keyboards (or other tracks via virtual instruments), arranging and mixing.

I got a Higher Diploma from the Institute of Contemporary Music and Performance (in London), but I also attended the London Film Academy, the Hollywood Music Workshop and Scuola Nazionale di Cinema in Rome.
I also got a degree in film-music composition at the conservatory of Rovigo (Italy).

Tommaso has been really a great customer, great and fast communication. I will probably work with him since it seems a great guitarist and sing writer!

Thanks to Tommaso I developed my track adding key elements. Tommaso is very kind and I'm impressed by the fast answer and versions of my track.

Great Job, I recommend him! He is one of the best guitar players I've ever met too.

Interview with Tommaso Ermolli

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The work I'm most proud of, is an unpublished one. I was asked to record a guitar solo for Andrea Bocelli's latest album "Sì" but then the song was severely shortened and didn't make the final edit. It was a great experience to be involved anyway.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My latest deal was with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). I'm curating music and sound design for their divulgative videos.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Jay Stapley. He was a teacher of mine back in London and he's a great provider of guitar sessions and mixing!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Digital has freedom and re-calling. Analog has warmth and tridimensionality.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: We'll go forward until they're happy.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like to know new people and spend time in the studio.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They usually ask me how I'd go about their productions and I like to answer that every production is different and that's the beauty of it.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest one is that people like me can or should make you sound like someone famous.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you have? What's your goal?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to what I've done in the past and have a chat with me about what you're looking for.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My speakers (one couple is 1 item, right?). My Apollo Twin audio interface. A guitar. A bloody good microphone. My laptop.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started playing guitar at 11 yrs old, circa. In the first decade of my career I mainly played on studio albums for Frontiers Records and Lion Music with great musicians such as Virgil Donati, Rufus Philpot, Dennis Ward. I then started to work on writing music for visual media by writing scores for docs, installations and adverts for Zeiss, Honda, SkyTV and more. Now I like to do both sides of fence. Screen music and non-screen music.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a big bowl of mixed stuff from the BB King to Jay Z.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd like to work Corrado Rustici. He was one of my early influences as a young musician.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't over arrange your music. Space distribution is key. The interlocking of frequencies is art but science, too.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: My range is pretty wide. from modern pop, soul, EDM to orchestral music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Having a career as composer for visual media, I'm also able to orchestrate and that gives me, in parallel, an ability to see the big picture in a song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring my experience as a guitar player, producer and arranger.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to chat with my client about his ideas, his taste and his goals. Then start working on his song, send him a version and go on from there.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Here's a list of my gear. - Universal Audio Apollo Twin - Dynaudio speakers - Apple Macbook Pro - Gibson guitars - Taylor guitars - Neumann mics - AKG mics - UAD plug-ins - Waves plug-ins - Eventide plug-ins - Eventide hardware

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I like all sorts of music productions, from a live band feel to modern electronic productions. I can span from Max Martin to Rick Rubin to Calvin Harris.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I'm usually asked to turn a raw demo into a fully produced song. I like to understand your initial idea, the artists you like and build on that.
