Collin Eades on SoundBetter

My name is Collin Eades and I'm a producer and mix engineer in Nashville. I produce, engineer, and mix bands and artists from all over, and also play out as a guitarist.

I work with artists, both new and already established, to develop their projects into finished records through arranging, aesthetic, producing, recording, and mixing. I love to hear someone's creative vision and help turn it into reality!

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Collin is both fun and easy to work with, and made the production of my first song a very positive experience. He made a full effort to understand and deliver exactly what I wanted, and even helped me find who I am stylistically as a recording artist (vocalist). I've learned so much from him through the process and look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.

Interview with Collin Eades

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Mountaintops, Basil Tooth, Mariah Sophia

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: Having the honor of working with someone else on their creative dream and seeing them excited about the final product is the best feeling ever.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Who do you love to listen to? What's the perfect setting for your song to be played in? How's life been for ya lately?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Show me what you've been working on and tell me what you hope it can become! Whether it's an iPhone voice memo or a completed production mix, the more material to choose from the better, and the more I'm in tune with your vision, the more fun it will be to make it happen.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Monitors, Laptop, OP1, interface and a lime La Croix.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: Grew up playing guitar in various church bands and loved recording songs I would write as a kid on a 16-track Yamaha workstation keyboard I inherited. This led to me studying Music Technology at IUPUI and playing classical guitar as a primary collegiate instrument. My junior year, I landed an internship at Aire Born Studios and learned the ins and outs of recording. Finally, after graduation I started working freelance from home and playing out as much as possible!

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Bon Iver without a doubt. That guy is the master of conveying emotion without explicitly saying what he's feeling. His melodies and instrumentation are always so much more of a feeling than a series of notes or pitches.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Pop, folk, and modern worship music.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I always want to get to know the person behind the song and hear the story of where the music is flowing from for them. I love getting an honest response from people and DEFINITELY feel like this leads to the best music. It's a gift to be able to create with someone and help promote their vision and I want to honor that with every step in the process.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I've always been good at big picture perspective. So many times, an artist can get lost in the details of a project, they can forget to step back and remember the emotion that inspired it in the first place. When you've listened to your song 20+ times, it can be hard to hear it for the first time like an audience would. I like to bring a refreshed sense of perspective to the table, matched with a strong knowledge of theory, production and arrangement techniques (and of course some really cool gear to tie it all together).

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Don't completely avoid human imperfection in a song. While human imperfection should never distract from the music, it's the little imperfections that give a song character and make it so much more relatable and seemingly familiar to people. Creativity is not found in perfection!

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: I love these recent songs I've been producing for the worship-pop group Mountaintops. Those guys are so passionate about bringing creativity to a genre (worship) that is usually so lacking in creativity. I produced, mixed, and help co-write these last few songs, and it's been a blast to see them feel so well represented by their music.

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: Both! Analog exists so naturally and is full of imperfections that make it "human" somehow. Also it sounds amazing. On the other hand, digital can accomplish so many amazing things analog can't, and also it's FAST.

  27. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  28. A: I promise to be honest without being too harsh, with the sole purpose of getting your music to sound as best as it possibly can in whatever circumstances you're working with. I will put my preferences aside, while still giving valuable feedback in order to make any part of the process a success.

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: That it is a quick process

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: I absolutely love anyone who blends organic and electronic sounds in a pop-focused way. Guys like Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, and Jack Antonoff to name a few. Jack Antonoff is a genius.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Typically, I create full productions for clients that are ready to be mastered and released. This includes production, editing, mixing and unlimited revisions till everyone is happy. I also enjoy mixing for those who have recorded either on their own or with another producer!

  35. Q: How would you describe your style?

  36. A: Engaging and organic!
