Interview with Greg Allison

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Most recently, I have been working on filming and recording ambiences with my Canon DSLR and Zoom H6 handy recorder at a local park in my town. The recordings mostly include wind blowing leaves and birds chirping. I use the recordings as a foundational layer which I record parts on top of. The genre of music I write for this project is usually gentle piano and guitar swells.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What artists or reference tracks inspired you to write this song? When you share this song with someone, what do you specifically want them to remember about the song?

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: I would have to have my MacBook, my American Standard Telecaster, my pedalboard, a Scarlett 2i2 interface, and my trusty in-ear monitors.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been composing and mixing for over 10 years. It really started in early high school for me. I was able to focus on music in my free time after school and work every day, which allowed me to earn some money while learning the ins and outs of music production. Over the past 6 or so years, I have been on leadership at a couple of local churches and I have gained the majority of my live music experience in weekend service and conference environments. It's only been about a year since I've decided to turn my creative passion into a career.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with the artist Jordan Critz. His style is both ambient and cinematic, which has inspired me to be more inventive and creative in my approach to composing and mixing.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Don't let details stop you from creating. Just continue to create more and work on the details later.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I have the most experience in ambient rock as well as contemporary Christian music.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is my attention to detail while editing and mixing.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: When writing or recording parts for a song, I typically listen through the track a couple of times and see what the overall feel of the track is, and what I can add to enhance and support the overall emotion of the song. When recording, I like to record a couple of different takes and parts to give the artist some options.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Andy Othling, David Critz, Jakob Ahlbom, Adam Young, Bobby Strand, Chris Greely, Luke Hendrickson,

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: My experience is in recording, editing, and mixing. Among the previously mentioned things I do, I enjoy sound design and creating ambient textures/soundscapes for film, or other cinematic productions. The genres I work on most include rock/post rock, ambient, and CCM.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: The heart of my computer is my 2019 MacBook Pro 16". I recently installed iLoud MTM studio monitors as I began serving more local clients here in the Kansas City area. I primarily mix in Logic Pro with a few 3rd Party Plugin bundles, such as Waves Horizon, Native Instruments Komplete 12 Ultimate, and Several other niche-use plugins, like Melodyne 4 Editor, Steven Slate Trigger 2, Omnisphere 2, etc.
