Interview with Jabbo Heyne

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Oh, that was a song production of some of the best rappers in my city. I was still there at the beginning and we had communication problems. When I sent him my mix he said it was the worst thing he had ever heard. I was speechless, but my ambition grabbed me and it was important to me that he was happy with the song. He no longer wanted the beat from the internet and had one made for him. when i got it i completely remixed the song and he said it was the best thing anyone has ever done for him. I recorded and mixed the song by the way.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I work on some rappers in my hometown. I particularly enjoy that because they are really very ambitious. And of course I mix a lot...

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm relatively new to soundcload but I'm sure there are a lot of good musicians, producers and engineers on this great platform.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, because of the workflow. Fast work is everything in mixing too don't lose the common thread and feel the music! Plugins give me the opportunity to quickly exchange processors that is a major advantage. I always use different tools for every song.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: 100% professionalism no matter what you pay, what the song is like or how famous you are. Everyone gets my sound

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Music stays forever. You can still listen to the work years later and share it with friends. Music connects... and I love supporting newcomers and seeing the progress they make!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Many think they can easily mix it themselves. But the process requires a trained ear, a good room, and good listening. This not only costs a lot of time, but also money. Unfortunately, the importance of engineers is still underestimated. They are just as important in the production as the beat maker and the rapper. They can screw up or refine the sound.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I usually ask for the budget, a deadline, and a demo. I'm always happy to accept requests, but mostly the artists tell it by themselves ;)

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Also gives people with few reviews a chance! They often have faster delivery, cheaper prices and also very good quality.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My Mac Book Pro, Apollo X6, Neumann speaker, Beyerdynamic headphones and Neumann Microphone

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I made music myself and concentrated on sound engineering about 11 years ago. I'm self-taught, but I've been to countless workshops, worked with older artists early on and made a name for myself in my city.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Detailed, punchy and pleasant to listen to

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Jay-z, he shaped the scene and is very difficult to get hold of for a collaboration.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Practice is the be-all and end-all. As an artist and producer, you should also acquire a certain basic knowledge. This gives you the confidence to try things out and form your own style.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip Hop, Rap & RnB

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I specialize in rap vocals. I'm also very familiar with 2-tracks, which are very common in Hip Hop.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Balance, control and movement

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I spend much time to understand the artists. After checking the demo I mix and master the song and come back to my client. After he has listened to it in his familiar surroundings, he may come back with a few requests for changes. Finally, he gets the revision. However, sometimes even the first version fits.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use a minimalistic high-end setup and mixing with Uad Apollo x6 and Neumann speaker

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Derek Ali

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mixing and mastering of rap music
