Beat Maker and Mixing Engineer

Tord Stemland aka toddybeatz on SoundBetter

I have more than 10 years of various music production and audio experience from live recording, studio recording and mixing. My DAW of choice is Pro Tools but I have also experience from Reason, Ableton but I always return to my trusty Akai MPC Renaissance for my beat making.

I produce HipHop beats for unlimited and limited use. My influences span from DJ Kool Herc, Rakim, Ice-T, NWA, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious BIG, 2 Live Crew, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay-Z, Drake..

I will mix your song(s), or album in cooperation with you the artist, in order to help you obtain the sound and footprint you hear in your head. Give me your vision where we are heading and what is the perspective.
In order for me to help you I would like to hear at least 3 reference tracks and a rough mix if possible.
My expertise comes from countless hours in the studio, tweaking, listening and tweaking again, mostly self taught. I also hold a Certificate from Audio Masterclass Professional Course in Mixing from The Oxford School Of Audio.

Interview with Tord Stemland aka toddybeatz

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Various rock.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: Drive and patience.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Hybrid. A mix in the digital domain can always be recalled 100%. The plugins existing on the market today are good, but in my experience they still lack the warmth and drive as good quality analog outboard bring to the table.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My two 1176s and the LA2A, Gibson Les Paul 59 and my biggest backup hard drive.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been in the audio industry for 10 years. I started doing live sound engineering downtown in Stavanger. Later a friend of mine established a music and recording school, enabling us to work with local talents in various aspects.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Every artist with a great song with vibe! I do not do non-English songs(Scandinavian excepted) as I need to understand the lyrics in order to help the artist.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Do not over-compress when tracking.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Interest, drive and a sincere desire to help the artist lift the song to new heights.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I receive a rough mix from the client and other reference tracks in order to determine the sonic direction of the material. After doing edits regarding timing, tunings etc I push up the faders in order to start the process.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My DAW is Pro Tools HD. In addition to the trusty stock Avid plugins I use 3 party plugins from Eventide, FabFilter, Massenburg, Massey, Plug & Mix, Plugin Alliance, Slate Digital, Sound Radix, SoundToys, Universal Audio, Waves, Wavesfactory and iZotope. I also always add color to my mixes by using the hardware version of the the 1176 or LA-2A. Most often I always strap the API 5500 EQ across my mix bus. As for monitors and headphones I have worked for years on Genelecs and Avantone Mix Cubes. For fine editing etc. I use Senheiser HD 580.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: There are many. Lately I have been studying various work of Rick Rubin and Andrew Scheps.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Most of my work is mixing. There are always edits, timing issues also.
