Mixing songs

Richad L. Sapp on SoundBetter

I would lie if I said I am a pro-engineer. I am not. I am an intermediate mixing student who's trying to build up a client base for fair price. I love music in first place and I love to be a part of a process of creating some new music.

Interview with Richad L. Sapp

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: Once I receive stems I do a rough mix and send back to revisions until the customer is satisfied. I am opened to as many revisions as it's needed (a fair number of revisions of course). But before I start to work I would like to listen some examples of music the band or single artist likes. That's very important for me to know the taste of a customer. When it comes to mastering it's same process and the reference track is even more important.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I would lie if I said I am a pro-engineer. I am not. I am an intermediate mixing/mastering student who's trying to build up a client base for fair price. I love music in first place and I love to be a part of a process of creating some new music.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: My own Fusion-funk CD.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I'll do my best believe it or not.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Creativity!

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What's your favourite musician/band and why?

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Funk, Pop, Rock, Pop-rock. But I am opened to any styles. We are always learning!

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Lot of music listened and as I am a professional musician I have pretty much experienced ears.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: Nothing that's not there - that's killing the music! I try to brighten up the bright sides a song to stay in its natural mood. Unless customer wants something different of course.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Logic Pro X and it's pluggins, few waves pluggins and what's the most important a nice acoustically treated room with three pieces of great stereo.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Bruce Swedien and Eddie Kramer
