Interview with Kelly Rose

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Always working with other artists around the globe.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: It's hard to describe. Soulful? story teller? Take a listen to some of my songs and you tell me.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: No fair -- there are so many to choose from! I think right now I would love to work with either Timbaland or Missy Elliott. All I have to say is this --In a time where 808's and the dirty south hi-hat were blowing up, they came from the south and blew everything out of the water just by sampling babies laughing into hits. Those are the creative musical brains I want to work with. To me, that song "Are You That Somebody" is still fresh now.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Don't be afraid of imperfection. In this world of AI we need the crackles and pops. I've seen within the industry a formula in production that people never really deviate from. While the end product shimmers and shines there is something missing, a lack of authenticity at times. Sometimes a breath, a crack in the vocal can show fragility or true emotion. Don't be afraid to break boundaries and create your own methods to reach your sound.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I've been asked by artists to collaborate on different genres of music : Alt, EDM, Lofi, RnB, Pop, hip hop and trap You can find several samples of this above in intro.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Writing and singing catchy melodies, creating harmonies and lyrics. I also like to be clever and inject a little humor into my work when the song calls for it.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I approach things with the same passion and thought as I would my own piece of music. I bring emotion, innocence, edge, beauty and depth. I'll bring my ideas and creativity.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I get to know the client/artist. Find out their tastes and see what ideas they have in mind, what they like, what are their influences for the piece and what they are going for. I don't see myself as just working for them but collaborating and building with them, so I approach things with the same passion and thought as I would my own piece.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: While I can be generic and say all the really obvious ones like Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell etc, and of course I do truly appreciate their craft, but there is something about these folks who I feel deserve much much more credit for their craft than they already do. Writers & innovators such as : Stevie Nicks, Missy Elliott, Raphael Saadiq, The Rza, Phil Collins, Gotye, Sibelius... just to name.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Gear used : Microphone/s: Blue "Spark" + Audio Technica "AT 2020" + Neumann TLM + Shure (for acoustic guitar) Audio Interface: Presonus Studio systems DAW : Acoustica Mixcraft 8 Pro VSTs: Waves, Izotope suite, Antares, Celemony

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Usually, clients come to me with an instrumental and I write top line melodies and lyrics. Other times clients have a song but it is missing something, I add vocal embellishments, interesting harmonies and adlibs. A lot of the time clients have an idea and a basic skeleton and we collaborate to create a complete song.
