Interview with Paul Hird

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I am currently working on the finishing touches of an EP with my own old UK 90s band Rag Doll

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Analog all day long for tone, depth, separation. Digital for problem solving, editing, automation, tuning, timing corrections....

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: My promise is to do what a client expects when they go to a professional and elevate their music to the level they hear in their heads.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: In mastering I really get to work with a great variety of different music and artists from all over the world. In mixing, I get to really dig in to individual elements and make production choices too. I love to do both.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Are you the mix engineer? Are you also the artist? Is this a one song project or are there more tracks to come? How and where did you track the song?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: My advice is to try a sample master. The first master for each new client is free.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I started out as a singer and guitar player/bass player in bands in the UK in the late 80s. Immediately I began recording on home 8tracks and so on and just really never stopped working with audio ever since.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: My approach brings a large, open and deep feeling, which allows you to hear and experience elements previously going unnoticed. Multidimensional.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Release the very best version of your song that you can possibly afford to make, even if it means you have to save up and wait for a little while. Your music is valuable enough to invest in quality.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz, Country, Rap, Metal, World Music..... I’ve done a bit of everything

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: 1 Singing 2 Mastering Engineer 3 Mix Engineer 4 Bass Guitar 5 Guitar

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I always try to bring extra dimension to a song or a piece of music.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: Individual elements of your mix will be mixed through premium external hardware in real time and those elements also bussed and summed in the analog domain. Software plugins too many to mention round out the toolkit for problem solving issues. The sound comes from the routing of the signals through the gear and the way it sums back together.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: Golden Hill Studio is set up as an analog heavy hybrid system with premium hardware and software on every element of your mix/master.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: The majority of my work is mastering a client’s final mix provided by producers or mix engineers. I do also mix when the right project comes along!
