Interview with Ian Herselman

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I've been writing and recording my own music since 2008. I studied Music theory & Electric guitar at South African Music Institute in 2013 Completing The RSL Royal Rockschool GR6 Electric Guitar exam & passing with Merit. Over the last years I've started releasing my own music, recording artists and drastically improving my mixing skills.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Recording vocals over pre-recorded backing tracks & full band sets. Artists frequently ask me to write, arrange, record & produce their songs so they can record their vocals after tracks are done. Annually I record a full live Barnyard show, 20 - 30 songs per evening then proceed to edit & mix the tracks to be used on DVD.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: Recording, editing, mixing & mastering a 10 track Cover Album for a client who proceeded to licence, print & sell copies of the works. The only thing that really matters to me is seeing the excitement and smile on the clients face while listening to the final product.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I prefer the simplicity, feel, look and sound of analog gear, but these days digital is easier to find and more affordable. Recently digital plugins hardly sound any different than the Analog versions.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The Music

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Sometimes Less is More, especially when it comes to heavy electric guitars. 2 Rhythm tracks and Less gain goes a long way.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Soft Rock, Hard Rock & Alternative Metal

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Life, Energy, Punch & Clarity.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Musicians who inspire me: Benjamin Burnley, Shaun Morgan Welgemoed, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Pete Loeffler... Production Professionals who inspire me: Chris Lord-Alge, Jordan Volariant, Graham Cochrane, Joe Barresi
