Danny Harris on SoundBetter

Mixing engineer for independent artists and creative individuals. Top quality, no fuss.

I worked for six years as a staff engineer in a professional audio house in Chicago as a recording, sound design, and mixing engineer. I've been freelancing for artists and brands the past two. I've been writing, recording, and mixing my own music for longer. I love mixing and mastering music for artists of all kinds. I'm proficient and efficient.

Nothing better than a client who has a clear, professional vision for a project!

Danny came to me with a very specific brief, and his feedback for a revision was also extremely helpful and detailed.

    Great experience for sure!

Interview with Danny Harris

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on an album with an artist, Just Some Kid. Took a very DIY approach and made it moody, made it punch. You won't hear much like it, I think. It's cool. I also just scored a short film called Gray Market.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Working with artists to create productions with the opportunity for sync placement. Writing my own music. Writing poetry. Probably drinking tea or a beer.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: For sure! Some of the folks who have left reviews on my page are honestly super impressive.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital can do it all. But analog will always have style.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll be communicative and honest, and if we're on the same page, you'll be happy.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How much/how long? Those are the big ones, and rightfully so. It all depends, but I'm not pricey. I'll do it right and work with your budget.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Mixes that serve the song make more of an impact than people think.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: How are you? How would you describe the music you make? Who are your inspirations?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: You're probably closer than you think! Let's just talk about your vision and get it there.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Artist and producer --> studied Recording Arts in college in Chicago --> worked at a professional audio house in Chicago on major advertising campaigns --> freelancing. It's been a while!

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: DIY, with professional cred. No one says music made simply has to be a step below anymore.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Or Aaron Dessner from The National. I think those guys think about intention in such a cool way. Just to be a fly on the wall around them would be amazing.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Don't be afraid to push things, don't overthink it.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Mostly independent stuff, but the genres can vary.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Knowing what will make a song stand out, and being thorough.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: An awareness of what is working in the space, and the flexibility and creativity to get it there.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Depends on the song, but we have to say that. If a mix has been started, and things are working, I take it from there. I try to respect the artists original direction at every turn. I'm not here to disassemble and put my ego in the mix. I want to serve the song and serve the artist's intention. If I can lend ideas along the way, I will.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have an iMac with the latest Pro Tools. I've found working in the box gives me all the flexibility I need. There are tons of boutique plugin companies now that are making some really killer stuff. I get the sounds I'm looking for.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: I'm inspired by musicians who do a lot of their own production. I grew up making bedroom music, studied recording arts in school, and worked in studios since then. I listen and mix as a musician, and I admire artists who do it all.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: In the box mixing. Taking someone's partially finished demo project to the level where it sounds great and competes with the music out there. Mastering for the last 5-10%. Consulting on ways to improve their own mixing process.

  41. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  42. A: I love music. I like the creative process of making things come to life.

  43. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  44. A: Computer, interface, microphone, keyboard, guitar.
