Diego on SoundBetter

My goal is to bring music to a professional sounding quality without losing the essence of the song.

Diego is a sound engineer from Madrid, Spain. His passion for music has driven him to be a tracking and mixing engineer for several bands before deciding to take the Music Production Technology and Innovation master’s degree at Berklee Valencia. As a sound engineer, Diego hopes to capture and deliver the artist’s vision of their songs as truthfully as possible.

Interview with Diego

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recording a 15 man classical orquestra with a conductor in a fairly small room and making it sound great. I was the head engineer of the session.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Not yet, but I am not afraid of recommending other engineers if the song I am presented to mix is outside my expertise.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital, it is almost the same if you know what you are doing. Getting character with digital is more difficult but not imposible.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I am going treat your music like if it was my own.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Working with music.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How do your mixes sound? My answer: They don´t, I make sure you can only hear the music not my mix

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I don't fix bad recordings.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I ask for references and to tell me more about the song.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: If you want character and punch or a smooth but lively mix I am your engineer.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Power engine (DAH), my speakers, my Apollo Twin, Izotope Trash 2 and UAD 1176 blue stripe.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: It has been six years of mixing songs, I have two degrees (Bachelors and Master's) and have been recording bands from rock to classical.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I like my mixes with character. A mix that sounds too perfect and clean has no appealing for me.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Can´t answer this, there are a lot of talented people I don´t know out there whom I am sure I would love to work. I am inspired by songs, not artists.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Getting a good sound starts with the instrument you are recording. Don´t fix it in the mix and the performance is everything for a good song.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Rock, pop, R&B and Indie.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Knowing how to get any sound I have in my head without over processing the audio signal.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: My expertise and experience technically and artistically as an experienced mixing engineer.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Listen to the references sent or talk to the musicians. Listen to their track. Listen again. Make a rough mix sculpting the main vibe we are going for, and then fine tweak everything.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My monitors are Focal Alpha 65 and my sound interface is a Apollo Twin Duo. I mainly keep things in the box with a mix of the best available plugins such as UAD, Waves, Steven Slate, Soundtoys, HOFA...

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Enhancing their music to meet a commercial quality standard, always keeping in mind the vibe they want for their song.
