Interview with Mikromix Studio DMV

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My work on HBO's The Wire (season 4 and 5) was pretty fun and fulfilling. I wasn't sure the songs would make it but 8 tracks actually made it to the screen.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Mixing a project for NFT creation.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Idk

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Yes, cuz why not. I know both worlds and take advantage of that in my mixing.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Satisfaction guaranteed

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love mixing and creating music so just being in the lab is like the beach to me.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Are you available today? Depends.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What artists do you listen to and who's mixes do you like the most.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: A good pro will save you lots of time and allow you to be more focused on the artistry.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: SSL Six, Akai MPC, MacPro, a Mic, and my Adam Monitors (I'll just count both as a set lol)

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Audio engineer since 1990. Started on reels then moved to ADATs/DATs around the mid 90's. Fully digital in 1999 and began incorporating analog again around 2004ish.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Analytical and Musical

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Don't make any changes unless you know exactly why and never use templates or presets for a custom fit product.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Mostly Rap and R&B but also Pop, Reggae, some Jazz and more.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Mixing and Editing Audio

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I let the song become what it needs to be received in a sonically clear and emotional way.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Video of mix breakdown on my site. I usually listen to what I received to digest what is needed and then I do what the song needs. Sometimes its a lot; other times it's pretty close and just needs some refinement.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Hybrid Analog and Digital - Protools, Logic, and other DAWS + the best plugins + SSL SiX, Dangerous Music D-Box, 500 rack for vocals and some other analog processing gear. I have been refining my rig for the last 15 years and its dialed in quite nicely these days. You won't be disappointed.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Young Guru, Mike Dean, Alex Tumay

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: My most frequent action is mixing a rnb or rap song with around 10 stems give or take. I do vocal tuning on more than half by my estimation. I include 2 revisions and mastering with all the mixes.
