Interview with LAWRENT

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Very proud of the record I worked on for the Cheat Codes country album which featured some of the biggest names like Lady A and Dolly Parton. My song "Something's Coming" was the one featuring Lady A and it was mixed by one of the biggest engineers in today's industry Serban Ghenea. Quite a bucket list moment for me.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Mostly digital, because I love the flexibility and being able to recall anything, anytime, anywhere!

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: People usually ask about pricing, it all depends of their need but I can make it work with a budget.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: People don't usually understand the scope of what a music producer do, from the songwriting to the mastering stage. It really is an overview of the whole process to make sure you deliver the right vision for the record.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Right now I’m working on records for Alok, David Guetta, Pink, Cheat Codes, Topic alongside developing my own solo project.

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: Yes absolutely, my man Joe Taylor for topline writing and vocals. Incredible artist and human being!

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I’m an over achiever and I always deliver, always! It’s how I made it to where I am today!

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: What I think is amazing about what I do is first of all being to create something out of nothing that can potentially impact millions of people. That type of connection through art is almost like a superpower.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your general vision for your project? What’s your end goal with this record? What artists/records are you passionate about?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I think it’s best to have a clear vision for what you want but also to be open to suggestions and ideas. Collaborative work always brings the best results!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I think I would do with a guitar, midi keyboard, laptop, speakers and sound interface!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been in the music industry professionally for more than 10 years now. I started out writing songs and singing in a rock band in my teenage years. Eventually moved on to production having no clue what it meant as I simply wanted to record the band and one thing lead to another. Signed my first publishing deal, then record deal, first songs on the radio, number one records, etc. A real journey!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is very much timeless, emotional, uplifting, trendy and ultimately commercial in a broader sense as I’m always trying to make records so they fit a certain audience (ie a single for radio) or a certain time (a record designed for big festivals). And I want to make sure it always works for what we intended to do.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: One of my dream artist to work is Daft Punk, it will more difficult now they stopped the project but they are undeniably one of the most creative act in the past few decades. Both on the music side and on the marketing side of things. Their music is timeless and even records from 10 years ago could be released today and be global smashes.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: One of the best tips I can think of would be to always be open minded to try new things. It usually leads to much more exciting records. Listen to your collaborators and to your own instinct!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on what I call « all things pop » meaning pop dance or pop rock or pop folk etc. My records are always centered around a song first and the production purely depends on the vision of the artist. Even a massive EDM banger needs to be a great song first.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is definitely to make sure the records I’m a part of are the biggest possible, regardless of the genre and always tailor made for the artist I’m working with.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: In general, I would say my main focus would be on catchiness, energy and relevance. Meaning I always want to make sure we end up with a world class production that can compete with top records and even more important a timeless song with an undeniable chorus and an ear worm like melody.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It all depends of where we need to start but if it’s a songwriting session, I usually start with chords or a melody or a concept and build everything from scratch quickly to shape the first ideas and see what works.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup has been simplified over the years as I get to travel a lot between LA and London. I also like for the ideas to be in the front of the process without technology being an obstacle or a hassle to deal with. Therefore I now keep my setup minimal with my UAD Apollo, Laptop, speakers, midi keyboard, mics, guitar & instrument collection. I try to avoid outboard equipment so I don’t have to worry about recalls when I’m on the go. Since I simplified my setup, my creativity and process have both been better and faster.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Diplo, David Guetta, Daft Punk are 3 massive influences in terms of longevity, creativity and relevance. All able to navigate different genres to create the most amazing music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Generally speaking, I work on records from start to finish. Starting with the writing, the production, the mix and finishing off with mastering. But I’m always happy to jump in the process at any point depending on what’s needed from me.
