Interview with Daniel Melman

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first single track, Night Breeze, was recently released in May 2021. This was my first full production of an lofi jazz-hop instrumental. My goal was to make a simple, "chill" song to relax to. It was a ton of fun to make!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently cooking up a bumping reggaetón track with PB Guapo. Coming soon!

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I am very focused (I will lay out a plan and execute it to the letter), but I am also very laid back and easy to talk to. I am easily accessible and will check-in regularly and often.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Finneas and Billie Eilish, because I believe we have similar musical sensitivities (in terms of using organic sounds, little sampling, etc).

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: A highly-critical ear, which holds my mixes to the highest industry standards. I can also communicate thoughts very clearly and efficiently.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I have been classically trained in music theory and instrument performance since I was 3 years old. I bring my experience and musical sensitivity into every one of my productions. I specialize in harmonizing electronic sounds with live acoustic instruments (acoustic particularly guitar).

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: 1. [If making a beat] Record percussion/bass, then other instruments/sounds (piano, strings, woodwinds, ambience and vocals, in that order) 2. Mix/edit tracks (gain staging, volume balancing, trimming, comping, EQ, compression, FX, delay, reverb) 3. Master final mix 4. Revisions 5. Final master

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Working with music is a privilege, plain and simple; helping artists realize their musical vision is such a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Easy—laptop, midi keyboard, audio interface, guitar, headphones (AKA, my full equipment).

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I have been producing music for roughly half a year. I have been a musician all of my life, but began learning to mix and master recently to pursue a full-time music production career.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Full-bodied and live-sounding.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Keep a steady schedule, and take good notes.
