Interview with Richard Brown

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a project in 2016 with Evan Stewart. Evan is an industry professional, sound engineer and producer who has taught me a lot when it comes to the technicality of the mixing process. We worked on my own music at the time and it has served as the foundation and framework for my growth. I am forever in gratitude, thank you, Evan Stewart.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently just crafting as many singles/reference tracks as possible that I could muster into one project eventually

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Tyree Thompson

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I think either or works, solely dependent on what you are trying to achieve and how. Analog does help more with clarity, quality, syncing providing larger bandwidth and overall does create a very high quality project. While digital provides a convenience to compact your studio setup and drive ideas out quite quickly. If I had to pick between the two, I'd say analog just because I love a high quality production without loss of information.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To provide a project they are happy with until we are done. To provide a strong lyrical game and delivery in my artist services.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The ability to enjoy what I do and to be a part of someone else's journey. To see them react to a well catered to mix from me and be genuinely happy with what I had the honour to help them with.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Who are your influences? A. Chal & Drake mostly. Are you able to do (certain effect here) with my voice? It depends on my expertise and equipment, but we can discuss this further if it is within my capability to learn from another source. What genres do you work with mostly? I am multi-genre principled.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it is easy to process music in it's entire schematic when it actually takes time and some meticulous effort in some cases to bring the product or service to life.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Where do you influences come from? What is the age group you want your music to allocate to? What are your listeners interests?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Get the best possible for your project (reasonably within your means) so you do not have to worry about spending again.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook Pro, 2 battery packs, Microphone and Interface

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: To become someone self-sufficient in the music business and to provide my listeners with music they could feel granted my yearning to have a strong and large community/fanbase to work with. I've been working on music for 17 years now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Edgy, attuned, aligned and my message communicates on many volumes and layers.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: A. Chal or Kanye West

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Fall in love with the process, if you can take your first step into the genuine process of creating and building something you're working on, it becomes like a cleaning a space or a room, you feel obligated to keep going until the job is done where you become so enveloped and attuned to the process making it fun.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip Hop, Trap, R&B and on the side Art Rock.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Melodies, Lyrics and Rhythms

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Dynamic, character and a lot of meat for the bone of the song. Energy is a key thing, and I provide a strong sense of descriptiveness to the song so that listeners can remember it well, in lyrical/melodically catchiness, quality and execution.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to build a framework around what I'm creating first and really focus on laying out the structure so that the recording, mixing or production process is much easier to understand how to approach and deliver a job well done.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Currently operating out of a large sized and filled record room. Utilizing monitors, keyboard, a macbook pro, interface and studio condenser microphone.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Drake, A. Chal, J. Cole, Nas, Jhene Aiko, Thom Yorke, Coldplay & Radiohead

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Audio-Engineering, Rapping, Singing & Production.
