Interview with Maro

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Lots and lots of projects. Actually I do only projects that I feel connected with. Life is too short to work for money.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I mix album after album, every day. I do not know when will you be reading it.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I do not know yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Hybrid.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I feel good when my client feels good. I'm kind of old school when it comes to business. I really care about what I do.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I really do not remember. I love my life and my job is my life.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How many revisions do I get? Enough to make you satisfied. Can I change things in between the mix? Yes as long as we are replacing the same tracks.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I will turn a C song production to an A+ mix.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: The questions always depend on what I get. What are the deadlines? Questions about quality of recordings, if needed.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be sure that the song is finished.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Bettermakers, because I made them just for me so, Bettermaker EQ232P mkII, Bettermaker C502V. Form other manufacturers I really dig Fabfilter pro q2 , Distressor, Bricasti M7, API 312....

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: About 15 years. This is my day job. I never did anything else before and hopefully never will. Actually I think I wouldn't be able to do anything else.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Most of my clients come for my drums, bass and clarity. I'm not a fan of distorting the shit out of mix, just to get it loud. I like space and energy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The list is very long. There are artists that have amazing production skills and those that are very talented musicians. To keep my list short: Skrillex, Rihanna, Diplo, Beyonce, I think I would be good after this lineup :)

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: You can get a lot of production tips on my blog. But if I have to do it now, get your monitoring right. You cannot make music if you do not hear what you are doing. It's like painting without proper light.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip Hop and all kinds of EDM. I love to work on synths as well as samples. I try not to do genres I do not feel.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Understanding what the client need and good communication. My mixing and mastering skills can be heard on what I did.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: First of all I try to find what the client is looking for. Many songs have some directions that I can feel and go after them. My clients say that they can feel my mix even if they do not know who was mixing the song. Drums and bass are my fetish.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically I work alone and get tracks from my clients online. You are more then welcome to attend the sessions too. My studio has 2 CRs and you can work in one as I mix in the second, a hotel, 2 restaurants and a very nice surrounding. The turnaround time depends on many factors, can be one week, to one month if I have 2-3 albums on the line. Express also available if you have a $ for it.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: You can find more about my studio and me on pro-mixes dot com. I have a lot of analog gear and a very nice digital setup. Over the years I was able to try LOTS of different processors, monitors and other studio stuff and right now I have my dream setup. I spoil myself from time to time and add something new that I do not necessary need. I also run an awarded studio gear company called Bettermaker.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: The list is huge. THere are a lot of sound engineers that I'm inspired by, Dave Pensado, Jaycen Joshua, Ken Lewis, Jimmy Douglass to name a few....

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually mix and master hip hop and all kinds of EDM. Im also a remixer and produce my own music.
