Nate Flaks

Songwriter/Sound Designer

Nate Flaks on SoundBetter

As a songwriter, sound designer, podcaster, and half of a pop/production duo, I can cover a lot of ground when it comes to potential projects in music, podcasting, and film. Likewise, having written with 150+ artists in various genres I'm up for writing pop with any kind of twist you'd like! My top songwriting credit is "Long Shot" by Transviolet.

On my own, I'm a pop songwriter, film sound designer, and a proficient keyboardist up for any type of music/film project you might have!

Likewise, I'm also half of a pop/production duo called Sleeping Lion and together we're open to remix opportunities, production projects, and private/public performances. We also host a podcast called Talking Lion which we edit/produce ourselves.

I've written songs for Transviolet ("Long Shot"), Lizzy Land ("Losing My Head"), Phangs ("Good Now"), and Hailey Knox ("Red Eye") and I was a sound designer/editor on the feature films "Always Shine" (by Sophia Takal), "Dreamland" (by Robert Schwartzman), and "The Intervention" (by Clea DuVall).

Interview with Nate Flaks

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: New songs for Sleeping Lion, wrapping the season of Talking Lion (podcast), sound design for a few short films, and finishing up songs for some the artists we work with!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Noah Longworth McGuire (my more talented other half)

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Reach out & talk to me! Every project is different (as is what my schedule looks like) so there's always a chance we can figure out the best rate for your project!

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Pen, journal, 3 bottles of water

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started as a sound designer/editor mainly working on film with a folk band on the side. Then one evening in 2015 I met a rising pop artist (who I hadn't heard of at the time) who explained how the industry worked & that conversation inspired me to start my band Sleeping Lion & begin songwriting for other artists.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Pop-adjacent

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Pop mainly, but we often veer towards folk/alternative ideas.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Talking! Between songwriting session & the podcast, I'm always looking to have meaningful conversations with artists.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I'm very lyric-driven so I will always push for a strong concept with a real emotional core and try to squeeze in a few strong internal rhyme ideas.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Jon Bellion, Lido, Julia Michaels, Noah Gundersen, Loote, The Japanese House

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Songwriting mainly! Otherwise I'm often doing sound design for film projects or editing our podcast
