Interview with Robert Mr. Root Korzeniewski

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Two things. Just recently I produced an official anthem for the Shotgun World Cup championships. The other one was a remix for a British DJ. Nothing big in case of production but the remix not the original was chosen by Bob Sinclar for 2015 Pure Pacha Ibiza Compilation. That opened some doors.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: I'm working with the latest Cubase. I switched from RME to UAD Apollo interface and I have a large armory or various plugins, sounds and instruments to match demands from most of my clients. Even though I have some outboard synths from Korg and Nord I usually work with vitual synths trying to be up to date with the latest sounds.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: I do various productions from pop, dance, club, house. I also do mix and mastering services. Occasionally I write songs.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I was an analog guy in the past. Spent a lot on ourboard gear. Not anymore. The plugins especially those from UAD can give you similar results especially in pop, dance and club music and with the new Cubase 9.5 and it's brand new 64 bit engine I have the sound that I can honestly call "industry standard"

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I'm up to date with the recent pop, dance and club sound. Music production is my passion. But I like the old school disco sound so Nile Rogers is one of my inspirations.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I like grooves that make people dance.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: Depends of the client's request. Communication is the key. First I talk with the client and ask what he or she wants. What sort of sound or a song is in his or her mind. Then it's a normal studio work according to whether it's a remix, ghost production, mix or mastering.

  15. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  16. A: For the daily basis I'm working at Wicked and Loud Studios in Malta where I moved from Poland a year ago. I still do productions for myself and my clients worldwide and keep remixing club music.

  17. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  18. A: Got here by accident.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I never promise anything. We work untill they are happy with the result.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Too many to mention. But to spend some time with Nile Rogers in the studio would be a dream come true.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Treat a vocal track like an instrument. It must be a part of the track and arrangement not something layared over the music. Play with it. Cut it, process it, try to use more effects than usual reverb or delay. It will make the song more interesting.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Dance, Pop and Club

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Vocal recording and processing. I've been working with many artists in the studio. It's all about psychology, attitude and patience. Vocal artists are very emotional and you really have to know how to approach them.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: Arrangement elements and contemporary sound. Usually people have a general idea that must be processed to a final product.

  31. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  32. A: There is always something new to learn and new people to work with. It's a never ending quest for perfection.

  33. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  34. A: It's not easy. It takes time and a lot of knowledge to get the right sound.

  35. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  36. A: Actually customers come to me because they know me. The most common question is "can you give me a discount" :)

  37. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  38. A: 90% of clients want to sound like someone else. That's a fact. So I ask "give me 3 of your favourite tracks". If a client wants to be original and different that's a real challenge.

  39. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  40. A: Talk to me. Communication is the key.

  41. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  42. A: Macbook Pro with my Cubase and all my plugins and sounds, UAD Apollo interface, a minimum 4 octave midi keyboard and pair of sound monitors. Did I mention a comfortable desk and chair? :)

  43. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  44. A: I learned to play piano as a kid. Played drums as a teenager. Got into Amiga computer scene in the late 80's and early 90'ties as a musician. Then I got into DJ'ing and realised that music production is what I want to do.
