Somni on SoundBetter

Just a person trying follow my dreams and have fun. I began music production when I was in high school and fell in love with it ever since. I'm a self taught producer with much to learn. Youtube tutorials and Google have easily been my greatest teacher. Music is everything to me and if I can make an impact for just one person then I'll be happy.

Background:
Chris Ng, better known as Somni, is from Newton, Massachusetts. He first took piano lessons when he was younger for 6 years . In addition, Chris has taken 4 years of guitar lessons and learned to be proficient in both the acoustic and electric guitar. The Kygo/Illenium inspired producer first started producing in a music tech class he took in high school. Somni has been working on his skills as a new and upcoming EDM producer. Not knowing much about music theory, Somni has turned to watching Youtube videos to improve his knowledge. The aspiring producer and DJ has been working to establish himself in the Youtube community. Somni has decided to use his time to promote positivity while motivating his fans to raise the bar and set goals for themselves.

Interview with Somni

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of the first single I'm getting ready to release. I'v'e been producing for years and haven't released anything. Now I can finally have something to show the world.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Working on releasing my first couple tracks ever. I have some collaborations in the work and I am in the search for talented vocalist and songwriters at the moment.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The creative freedom I have and the ability to potentially inspire and uplift someone.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: I just take samples and layer them together to make a song. That I don't make any sounds myself and everything is a preset.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Just be real. Be specific with what you are looking for and have a nice attitude. Be approachable and make sure you communicate.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Laptop, midi keyboard, headphones, DJ deck, and some BIG speakers so I can rave on my own.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: Started playing piano since I was 6 years old. Took lessons for a while until I moved to the acoustic and electric guitar. I took guitar lessons for around 4ish years. I first started producing in a music theory class I took in high school during my junior year. I have now been producing for around 4 years now.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Future bass with some melodic dubstep and house aspects to it. I like the "in your feel" vibes that melodic dubstep and future bass have. I also like the energy that comes with most melodic dubstep or future bass drops. But I also like the "make me wanna dance" vibe that house tracks can bring.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Kygo for sure. He has been my biggest inspiration since I first started producing. I love his melodies so much and I strive to be half as good as him one day. Also Martin Garrix or Illenium would be cool to work with because they have such a unique sound.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Be yourself. I've tried replicating what other producers have done, but too many people have done that. Need to find people who inspire you and take make your own twist.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: EDM (House, Future Bass, Melodic Dubstep)

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Connecting with the music I make. If I can't make the listener feel some type of way then I don't have a good track or more work needs to be done.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I'd like to think I bring a melodic feel to the tracks I've worked on. To me the melody can make or break a track. I've worked on making melodies that really set the mood and tone for a good song.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I normally like to start with a chord progression or a melody before I move on to anything else. If I have vocals available first then I like to work around them. I start with my breakdown first then move into the buildup and drop before I add the intro and outro. I mix slightly as I am producing but most of it happens once I have most of the track laid out. If I really know what I want to do I can have a really productive session, but if I am not feeling inspired then I just won't work on the track that day.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: When I am at home, I have studio monitors, 2 midi keyboards, my laptop and headphones if I feel like using them.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Kygo, Martin Garrix, Illenium, Nurko, Seven Lions, Said the Sky, and Dabin are all huge inspirations for me.
