Interview with JB Russell
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I once interned at a studio and got to program drums for a track that was being worked on there. It was essentially my first "legit" win. However, I don't know whatever happened with the song.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently knocking out my cache of new songs to record.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not that I know of, no.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most common question is how I came to know everything from production, to writing, recording, and engineering. The answer is I started very young from a natural interest and never stopped feeding that interest and taking time to invest in furthering my knowledge.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the music industry. The best practice is to dive in for yourself and get the knowledge from experience.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The only advice I have is to trust me in my position and to trust the process.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music has always been my career path. I've been doing this as early as 16 years old.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I do work across multiple genres. Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Cinematic, Afrobeat, Reggaeton, EDM, Rock. I make it a goal to be well-versed in multiple genres.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Ultimately, I bring a level of musicality and ingenuity to create a sonic, rhythmic, and emotional experience for the listeners.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: MixedByAli, Preston Prizzle Reid, Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Kanye West.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both if possible. Analog has qualities that are to be treasured but digital has efficiency beyond measure. (I rhymed on purpose.)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You're gonna like the way you sound. I guarantee it!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to create ideas from nothing into fully polished pieces of artwork.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your goals for the project you are wanting to create? How can I help you achieve those goals? What inspired this project?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My keys, monitors, interface, laptop, and mic.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Eclectic.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Leon Bridges. He is a great talent that bends in between R&B, Soul, Funk and a little hip-hop.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Attenuate before you boost!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being able to bend and blend elements from other genres into the ones that I specialize to further the unique quality of the music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process is usually building tracks to write to. Then, recording vocals and building out production from there followed by engineering to completion.

A: 88 key Korg Kross Maschine Mikro II Scarlet2i2 SM 58 AKG K271 MKII Resolve 8" monitors
