Chords are coordinates, they send you to a place. ~ Pharrell

Forever a student, a motto I live by. Having been in music most of my life, I’ve been in it professionally since 2006. Some of the most influential to me has been, in no particular order: DJ Quik, The Beatnuts, Young MC, Nas, Talib Kweli, Erick Sermon, Dr. Dre, Daz Dillinger, Redman, Ghostface Killah and pretty much anything I could get my hands on. As I learned more about music creation I started falling in love with the sound design and production. I would pitch in on other peoples studio time so I could watch and learn. We didn’t have many resources back then so you had to make it work.

I was introduced and got to work with some amazing talents. Along the way I learned the craft of songwriting, arrangement, choosing the right sounds (tuning them), mixing, mastering, studio etiquette, management, etc. There’s so much to learn but I just focused on what I love most. That’s creating moving, lasting music that will live forever.

Interview with tiny Tsunami

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: When I receive a song to work on I like to sit with it as a "fan" first. This gives me a chance to get a feel for what the vision is for the artist and/or the producer. Once I listen to it a couple times I start to clean up the session if it needs it. I like to be organized, it helps my workflow. Once the tracks initial mix is done, I move into the creative mixing phase where I can explore what works for the song (automation, fx, etc.). After that I like to get feedback before mastering it. Once it's done and the master is complete I prepare the sessions and files for delivery back to the artist or producer.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I'm able to bring 16+ years of industry experience. Through my experience, I've found ways to work productively with the most creative flexibility for both myself and whomever I'm working with. I'm also not rigid with my feedback. As a creative who delivers such an important piece of art to someone, it just works best to be humble, listen and get them something they'll be proud of forever.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: It was a Spanish album and since I don't speak the language the artist was really patient with me. I got to ask questions about the songwriting and even got to get in on it. Overall a great experience. I was the producer and engineer for the project.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I'm currently working on an artist album and preparing music for Film/TV licensing.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both. Analog and digital have their place still in music. Depending on the sound you want to achieve it's good to have access to both.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I will treat your song or project as if it were my own.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: The songs that come out of it and the artist and/or producer being proud of it.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Q: Can I get it fast, for cheap and a top quality? A: Sorry my friend, you can only pick 2.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: Probably that anyone can do it. I suppose that's true however I realized when you work with people that love what they do and have the experience, you just get an amazing product.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What is your ultimate vision for the song or project?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: I'd encourage you to try it out. I know we all are a little reluctant to share our music or try someone out for the first time but I can assure you not only do I have the experience I really want the best result that we're both proud of. I will always work hard and treat your project as if it was my own.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: 1. Solar powered water purifier 2. Tent 3. Shoes 4. Knife 5. Bag

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I've been at it for 16+ years. As a kid I loved making noises and eventually beatboxed for kids who would do rap cyphers. After many years later I started creating my own music, over time I got good enough to be marketable. After that I was soaking up any and everything to make myself better so I can get my ideas out. Paying for studio time just to sit there and watch the engineer work became a regular thing for me.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: At times it can be clean or gritty and upfront. Some of my more soulful stuff is right in the pocket too. It really depends on what I'm working on. Each genre puts me in a mood while I work on it.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Chris Brown, Kendrick Lamar and Whiz Khalifa. I enjoy their perspective on how they make their music. It's a full experience when you listen to it. I'm sure the creative process for all of them is unique and it would be dope to be a part of.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: One music production tip would have to be don't give up. You're going to hit a wall as with anything that requires growth. Just keep pushing through. Try new sounds, a new VST, learn a new instrument, just keep going!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: It's a mixture between Pop, R&B, Trap Soul, Rap and Afrobeat

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: I'd say it's a toss-up between production and engineering. There's times where I find myself in a groove with music production then a project inspires me to level up my engineering. They work hand-in-hand for sure.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My home setup is pretty straight forward. Apollo Twin X, Neumann U87Ai, Adam A7X Monitors, RAM, a bunch of RAM.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: DJ Quik, The Beatnuts, Erick Sermon, Dr. Dre, Daz Dillinger, Darkchild, The Neptunes, Battlecat

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mainly Music Production and Mixing work. I'll be an in-session engineering as well where I fly out and join the artist.
