Interview with Matt Weisberg

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That I just want to shred all over any project I’m apart of.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: The States- Cathedral This album I did not record but I tracked all guitars for it. It was my first professional and original session in the studio. This album set me on a path of music forever.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I am currently recording a 20 song folk rock EP for a client. As well as producing my original bands music. Always looking for new students as well.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Yes, Sean Gaffney, Billy Buchanan.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: either. Because there are endless things to learn inside of both preferences.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I will always listen first, and make decisions that will elevate your track.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: That I am my own boss doing what I love to do.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: How fast is your work? I usually have a quality product in two to three days.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I make sure if they have any special requests we get an understanding of how to accomplish that first. I also make sure to mention the importance of references for desired tones/vibes ect.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be specific and be ready for questions.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I would take one acoustic guitar with extra strings, and an entire drum set. I think I could find ways to survive with those things.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been a private guitar instructor for about 9 years, and I have been tracking/performing and doing session work for 15+ years.

  26. A: John mayer meets The 1975 with a touch of worship.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Vulfpeck and or Theo Katzman. The reason I choose this group is because of the tightness and simplicity of their performances are under rated. They also always feature amazing musicians, that elevate the Vulfpeck sound.

  30. A: Don't trust your eyes, trust your ears.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Guitar playing and improvisation.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I have tailored what I would say sounds like me when I play guitar. Ive spent almost two decades learning about how to really listen to the music and add to it. My goal is never to stand in any spotlight, but to listen and make choices based on what the songs needs. To get under the music and lift it as high as my abilities will allow.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I work hard to achieve three goals in my process . Track good quality and tasteful audio, clean and edit all audio, organize audio. This always keeps me on top of deadlines.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I currently operate out of historic home, in a sound treated room with tall vaulted ceilings. Makes for good acoustic and vocal tracks. I have all amps miced and ready to track, and will usually layer tracks with a line 6 Helix as well.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Im always inspired by good musicians/producers/ engeniers who are choosing to continue to grow and learn.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually track guitars electric or acoustic. This includes if permitted rythem, solos, textures and supporting or main melodies. Besides tracking guitars. I also mix, edit and comp standard projects.
