Interview with Randy Bacdi

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That everything is technical... Mixing is an extremely creative process if you allow it to be.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: How many stems are in the project? Do they have a specific date they need the job done by? What kind of sound are we going for?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Release that song! Each song you create is special; don't just let it sit on your laptop. Put it out, let the world decide.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My Macbook, a pillow, the SSL2, a Neumann TLM 103, and a good pair of headphones.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I obtained my Associates in Business Administration, but never really knew what I wanted to do with that degree. I started creating music with my friends in 2016, and decided to do it professionally the following year. I haven't stopped since.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Free-flowing. I'm not overly attached to any plugins or chains. I do what sounds good for each song.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Bryson Tiller for sure. I would love to see his process for coming up with melodies.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Get in the right state of mind. If you aren't fully in the present moment, it's going to show in the track. (Pro tip: Turn off your phone).

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: The ability to see the broader picture. I prefer to capture the essence of who an artist is, rather than slamming plugins and compressors.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: First I like to get a feel for what the artists vision is. Is the record more lyrical, or energy focused? Once we chat for a bit, I'll get an idea of where they want to take the project. Then, I'll lay the foundation for a finished song, it's just small tweaks that the artists wants to make.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I like to keep it simple. I have a KT-1176 compressor and a WA-12 mic pre that routes directly to my DAW. I'm mixing in a fully treated room and monitor out of the PreSonus Eris E5's.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: My top 5 favorite musicians would have to be Bryson Tiller, J. Cole, RINI, Justin Timberlake, and H.E.R. Their styles are modern, yet still have an emphasis on lyrics and melody. When it comes to mixing, I really look up to Lu Diaz, Dave Pensado, and L10MixedIt.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mixing! The standard job I get are 2-track instrumentals with lead vocals, doubles, harmonies, and adlibs.

  27. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  28. A: Hearing the variety of undiscovered talent that's out there. It's crazy who gets to go mainstream and who doesn't. I just love hearing the music.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip-Hop / R&B.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening. I will always add my unique style to a mix, but more importantly, I will always listen to what a client wants. Their satisfaction is much more important to me than what I think sounds good.
