Interview with RipoAudio Mixing and Mastering

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm so proud of the upcoming Egregor album "Pachakuti", our first single "Grito Insurgente" is one of my best work. I co-produced, record, played guitar, mix and master that song, and album.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I'm producing the second album for the metalcore band Eleva, finishing mixes for the second album of my band Egregor, mixing a death metal album from the band Vilu, and finishing a pop rock single for Parada Mixta.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog is awesome, but so extremmely expensive. And digital nowadays sounds so good, that you can´t tell the difference in most cases, so my answer is DIGITAL, even though some analog stuff won't hurt.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I really love working with others musicians. I enjoy turning their tracks into a song that can provoke deep emotions.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: Sometimes people confuse mixing with mastering. And they are very different. When you have all your individual tracks you need mixing. And when you have your song fully mixed, is when you need mastering, the final touch to polish your song.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What are you looking to get with this song? What is the message of the song? How does your song sounds in your mind? Do you have any reference? What inspires you to write this song?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Always listen to how their mixes sound, there is a mixing engineer for every style and taste, is just a matter of finding the right one.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I've been doing this for 13 years now, first started as a hobby recording demos for my old band, but eventually I fell in love with mixing and started studying and mixing for other people who don't had the money to go to professional studios. Since then, I never stopped studying, reading and getting better.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I'd really love to work with bands like Katatonia and Anathema. I love the power in music, but the feeling is what is more important to me.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Just always pay attention to what the song is trying to express, and if the music is colaborating with that. I´ve found a lot of cases where the music is telling a different story than the lyrics and for me, that is a big mistake.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: I know how to make you sound powerfull, and clear. I have the sensitivity to express emotions, to detect the essense of a song and use it to highlight the message.

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I always try to bring art to the sound of every song, what is the mood of the tune, what the lyrics talks about, all of that is important to me in order to decide how to mix the song. Prosody apply in music.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: First I have a meeting (virtual) where we discuss all the details, expectations, styles, feeling, message of the song, etc... Everything so I can fully understand your song and how you wanted to sound. Then I takes me 1 or 2 days depending the project to mix it. We have revisions as needed and then another day for mastering. I like to keep constant communication to stay focus and in the same page.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: I work mostly "in the box". I have the best software available to make your tracks stand out.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually do rock and metal and everything in between. Some pop and indie music too.

  31. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  32. A: I promise to do my best untill they are really happy with the results.

  33. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  34. A: Laptop, my guitar, headphones, audio interface and one mic.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I admire Steven Wilson, David Castillo, Joe Carrel, Andy Sneap, Graham Cochrane, among others.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I usually record, mix and master rock and metal bands. I edit/tune and whatever necessary to make the songs shine and sound professional, no matter how hard that is always my goal.
