Mike has always been an incredible pleasure to work with. He produced the vocals and final mix for our 'Last Call' podcast theme song. Not only was the song produced quickly, on spec and professionally - our listeners loved the song.

Mike is the best there is when it comes to delivering a radio ready topline. He's got an incredible ear for melody and songwriting in general. We've worked together loads and I'm amazed at the quality every time. You will not be disappointed!

Mike is an amazingly talented singer / songwriter, and so easy to work with in the recording studio. As well as being a notable multi-platinum selling top liner - his vocals are always on point, with great lead vocals, backing vocals and harmonies. Mike is a very versatile musician too.

Thank you so much Mike for your absolutely fantastic work on my latest song. You completely transformed my song with such great songwriting ideas, which on top of your vocal production has given me a first class song ready to release. I am absolutely delighted and amazed how the song sounds and I will definitely be back very soon.
For anyone considering Mike. I 100% recommend him. You’ll never look back.

Interview with Mike Macdermid

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recently a song of mine was used on a video game that has 1 billion downloads. The video had Godzilla, Kong and Gundam in it. That was pretty special!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Several K-Pop demos and some video game songs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new to SoundBetter!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: When I was in a band, analog was always what I preferred because it felt right. But honestly, digital is so good these days, it's what you put into it that counts.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Honesty and transparency and a professional job.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Every day is totally different. Writing music is the best job in the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long I'll take! haha. As quick as I can but as long as the job is done right.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's the most fun job in the world. Sometimes it is! Other times it's like any other job and hard work.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I try to get specifics for everything. I'd rather know too much, than not enough.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure that you give as much information about what you want as possible.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Guitar, laptop, mic, decent interface and cables

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been in bands, toured, written for artists, done solo stuff, been in video games, been on TV - basically a bit of everything! I've also been a lecturer, radio broadcaster and much more.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Driven and focussed but laidback.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Jason Mraz. I think we'd write some great stuff.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Be unique. Do something fresh and don't over produce.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Usually K-Pop or J-Pop but really every day is different.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Communication. I am quick and professional and can get the job done, but I'm also critical of my own performance and will always try to give you my best.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Feel. There are loads of great vocalists out there, but you really want one that listeners believe when they hear them sing.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: For songwriting it varies hugely. Vocals - if it's someone elses song, learn the song, work on the lead vocal first and get it right, then comp it. After that work on the harmonies and adlibs.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Apollo TWIN, UAD plugins, GENELECS, Logic Pro X, lovely pre-amps and a selection of mics. My favourite is a modded Russian mic, that's been adapted to have the same insides as a Neumann, and honestly, it's lovely.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I love much of the current pop stuff but I honestly love so much that's out there. I have a soft spot for guitar based solo artists, but really, anything goes.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I spent my days recording vocal demos and writing songs for artists worldwide. I also run a publishing company and partner with the likes of Sony, Universal and more.
