Thomas Lyng Poulsen on SoundBetter

Classical guitarist with soloist degree - but with broad taste and sensibilities. Have worked as a sideman in rock and pop tribute and general covers settings and as a session guitarist for local independent artists. I also arrange for a myriad of instrumentations and am gradually moving into recording and producing from my home studio.

I will do guitars on your music! My speciality is - as it should be, for a clasically trained guitarist - on strings made of nylon, but I am no stranger to steel strings and electronics! I have a medium sized and diverse collection of guitars and the gear to create and record high quality sound that fits just about any music.

I am an accomplished sight reader and a fast learner, if you already have the part, but need someone to play it, while I also have the creative capabilities to create something coherent from rougher sketches and ideas.

My double album with the solo guitar works of Heitor Villa-Lobos has received fine reviews and national radio airplay here in Denmark - recorded, played and produced by yours truly in the home studio, that will also host my playing on your project.

I own several other stringed and plucked instruments, that I use for texture and colour, and will be able to deliver full arrangements based on those. I also have access to talented and creative players on most other instruments and the ability to program my ever expanding collection of quality sound libraries to supplement, when required.

Should there be a need for a background vocal while I have your session loaded, I am no stranger to such work either; so hit me up, and let's see, if we can create something!

Thomas came up with a charming Christmas song which he’d arranged for a big band type of set up. The horn parts were beautifully written and also challenging. He was great to work with, very patient and communicative. Highly recommended.

Thomas recently completed song #10, Dream of the Dancing Puppet, which included both audio and video recordings. I'm very happy with the overall results, and this concludes an ongoing collaboration for nearly two years. Thomas has been thorough and patient with my music, given the fact that the scores were unearthed from many years ago and required some clarification on my part. Thomas helped me work through everything from simple typos to the execution of particular parts. I recommend Thomas!

There aren’t many players who can tremolo, let alone as well as Thomas—this alone is enough of a reason to choose him. Thomas is versatile with his style of playing & composition, and you can feel that he cares about the quality of your project.

Thomas has done a fantastic job recording my solo guitar songs that were written many years ago. He is currently working through the fourth song and well on his way to completing a full length album. His playing, feel and song interpretation are top notch. Looking forward to hearing the completed album!

Interview with Thomas Lyng Poulsen

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Laptop, audio interface, large diaphragm condenser mic my main luthier built classical concert guitar and depending on my mood on the day; a steel strung electric or my other luthier built classical concert guitar.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I did my first studio session in the early 2000's. Much of what I did never came anywhere near the record. I did however learn a lot, and my subsequent session have gone way better! The majority of my career has however been made up of teaching and live work.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: The way I play any kind of music is greatly influenced by my classical training. I rely heavily on the dogma of "tone is in the fingers". If it doesn't sound good, it's on me! Having good gear helps, though.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Sting! His use of nylon strung guitars as a central part of some of his best songs through his career warms the heart of an aficionado like me. Oh. And he's one of the greatest songwriters ever.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I self produced a double album with the solo guitar works of Heitor Villa-Lobos, which has been featured on national classical music radio.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That it never gets boring! Every day I learn something new about my guitars, myself and music.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Give as much detail on your vision as possible! I follow direction well, and can easily inject my own personality and musicaility into even the most detailed playing instructions. Actually I can't help it!

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Doing a great take takes way less time than trying to fix a mediocre one in editing and/ or mixing!

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Any given day usually takes me around the world and up and down through history at least once, musically speaking. I count myself lucky to continually work on such a broad varity of music.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: The ability to immerse myself into a piece of music and make it my favourite piece ever - for at least the period I am working on it.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Big ears. The push-and-pull rythm sensitivity of a classical musician, when it adds to the song. My experience as an arranger and conductor has also given me a good sense of when to play to be heard in the mix, and when to play to blend in.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I prefer to live with a song for a few days before starting to record - listening, trying out ideas on my living room guitar if I hear something while spending time with my two boys and my better half. Sometimes I even chart out my more eleborate ideas; writing them down often reveals to me whether or not they are as good as I thought.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I work out of a room in a converted garage - all my mics and preferred instruments are within easy reach, so I can move between practising, arranging and recording with ease and fluidity.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Add flavor with guitars - primarily nylon strung.
