Interview with Colton Avery
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm really proud of a song called "Beg, Steal, Borrow" it just proved to me as a writer that even without any promotion, or shows over the last year and change. that as an artist I can write million play songs.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My second record, Touring with an artist names Au/Ra, and 4 songs for other people, 2 from sound better.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yeah Joe Ayoub. He's an amazing bass player man. We've worked together in the past and he's just great.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because we've always needed both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll give it my everything every time. For better or worse, that's all I can do.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I'm a musician. Nuf Said!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If I write lyrics and melodies and chords? and If if I'm comfortable in their suggested genre.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'd have to hear them first.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I'll ask about genre, any specific keys, melody/ lyric influences or desires, BPM range, How quick do you need this to be turned around, how many revisions.... the standard questions.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Tough one.... I'd just say I'm definitely flexible and hard working. and willing to do what it takes to get things right for you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: an Axe, Tarp, Rope, my guitar and some Coronas. Just pretend you own the place.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this since I was 20. so 7 years now. Moved to London at 24 When I signed to the Script, Went on a world tour, been in a lot of sessions, now I'm refined and climbing the ladder.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My aim has always been to be the electric guitar player in pop Music. We haven't had one in ages. but I'd definitely say I'm definitely a pop writer always after infusing that singer/songwriter honesty into my tunes.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Kendrick Lamar, just because I think a collab would be great and to just observe. I think his team are onto some real great music right now. and Of course I think bands I grew up idolizing, such as Coldplay, John Mayer, The Police,
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Simplicity, Simplicity, Simplicity... The toughest skill that's the most rewarding and the hardest to get right.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: As I said before it's usually Pop, Country, R&B, EDM, Singer/Songwriter...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Definitely my songwriting and melodies. Working with the Script, and various other writers has really refined that tool for me in the realm of Pop music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring Titles, melodies, lyrics, melody revision, guitar, bits of production, whatever's needed really.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the project really but as studio practice I write a song every 2-3 days. I spend an hour penning song titles, then once I have one an hour just finding ammo for that title.. then I'm off finding melodies, vibes, lyrics. and by the end of day 2 I need a song. Then my extra time is spent learning and jamming, and vibing cos that's where a lot of the good magic is found.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've got an Apollo Twin, SM7B, Occasionally a C414 when I'm not on the road, a Gibson 330, Fender American Strat, Martin 000-15m, and of course the complete Waves bundle, and a way to big supply of plug ins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Professionally I take a lot of inspiration from guys like Ryan Tedder, Bruno Mars who are artists and writers. As a musician lately I've been heavy into Dermot Kennedy, and Productions by Sounwave, but that being said I listen to absolutely everything. I think everyone does because of Spotify.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Usually I'm asked to write songs, topline, or just lyrics in veins such as Pop, R&B, Country, or Singer/Songwriter. That's the type of work that's most common for me, but the occasional outlier comes through and is always fun.
